Chip Ganassi’s Daring Gamble: Ross Chastain’s Rise to NASCAR Stardom and Dramatic Team Clash

NASCAR Cup Series driver Ross Chastain (1) battles Chris Buescher (17) during the Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tenn., Sunday, June 1, 2025.

Chip Ganassi, the renowned NASCAR team owner, made a bold move that paid off in a big way when he decided to give Ross Chastain a shot behind the wheel. In a sport where drivers are typically chosen based on sponsor recommendations, Chastain’s entry into Chip Ganassi Racing was anything but conventional.

The chain of events leading to Chastain’s opportunity began when Jeff Carpoff, the owner of DC Solar, noticed the young driver’s exceptional work ethic while he was working on a bus. Impressed by Chastain’s determination and skill, Carpoff advocated for him to join Chip Ganassi’s team. Ganassi, initially hesitant, eventually caved and allowed Chastain to prove himself on the track.

And prove himself, he did. In his very first race, Chastain fearlessly battled against top drivers like Kevin Harvick, showcasing his raw talent and potential. Ganassi was left in awe and decided to keep Chastain on board for the 2018 season, a decision that would later lead to Chastain racing full-time for the team in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Fast forward to the present, where Chastain finds himself embroiled in a teammate clash with Daniel Suarez at Sonoma. After initially staying mum on the incident, Chastain finally addressed the situation, owning up to his mistake and apologizing to Suarez and his team. The upcoming Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be the stage for both drivers to put the incident behind them and focus on delivering a strong performance for their team.

As the NASCAR Cup Series heats up, all eyes will be on Chastain and Suarez as they navigate the ups and downs of professional racing, showcasing not only their driving skills but also their ability to overcome challenges both on and off the track. Stay tuned for more high-octane action and intense rivalries as the season unfolds.
