Is Ferrari Already Doomed for F1’s 2026 Season?

Ferrari’s performance in the 2025 Formula 1 season has left fans and experts wondering if the team should already shift its focus to 2026. Despite a second-place finish in the constructors’ standings after the Spanish Grand Prix, Ferrari failed to make the expected progress, prompting Lewis Hamilton to suggest looking ahead to the next season.

The race in Barcelona showcased Ferrari’s potential with two drivers in the top six, while main rivals Mercedes and Red Bull faced setbacks. However, Ferrari still lags behind McLaren, with data revealing concerning insights for the team at Maranello. The introduction of new front wing flexibility checks aimed to close the gap with competitors, but Ferrari continues to struggle to match McLaren’s pace.

Charles Leclerc’s strategic sacrifice in qualifying did not pay off as expected, highlighting the team’s challenges in optimizing performance on track. With upcoming upgrades in the form of a new floor and rear suspension for the Canadian Grand Prix, Ferrari remains cautious about its prospects for improvement. The SF-25 is labeled a ‘bad car’ internally, with doubts lingering about its development potential and competitiveness.

The struggle to keep up with rivals has raised questions about the team’s priorities for the current season. Hamilton’s skepticism about the impact of upgrades and the need to focus on 2026 echoes concerns within Ferrari, with only team principal Frederic Vasseur expressing optimism about the team’s current trajectory.

As Ferrari faces a crucial decision regarding resource allocation and strategic planning, the looming 2026 technical rules add further complexity to the situation. Despite the ongoing battle for second place in the championship and planned upgrades in the pipeline, the Italian team must evaluate the cost-benefit of investing in the SF-25 for the remainder of the season.

With uncertainty surrounding Ferrari’s competitive edge and the pressure to balance short-term gains with long-term success, the Scuderia is at a crossroads in its Formula 1 journey. The upcoming races will be critical in determining whether Ferrari can salvage its 2025 campaign or if the team’s focus should indeed shift towards a more promising 2026 season.
