Charles Leclerc cools Ferrari fans’ hopes: ‘we’re not as close to Mercedes as you think’

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc Dashes Hopes: “We're Not as Close to Mercedes as You Think!”

In a shocking revelation that could send shivers down the spine of Ferrari fans everywhere, Charles Leclerc has cast doubt on the Scuderia's ability to challenge Mercedes this season. Despite a promising start to the 2026 Formula 1 season — featuring two podium finishes with two different drivers and a solid second place in the Constructors' Championship — the Monegasque driver remains cautious about the team's prospects.

During a press conference at the iconic Suzuka circuit, Leclerc was asked whether Ferrari could genuinely threaten the dominance of Mercedes, particularly in light of the impressive performances from George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, who have secured consecutive victories. However, Leclerc's response was far from optimistic, leaving fans reeling. “I don’t think we are as close as people might think,” he stated bluntly, highlighting the stark reality of Ferrari's current position.

The reality check continued as Leclerc elaborated on the challenges posed by the Silver Arrows. “Of course, in the early races we see a lot of battles between the cars, which is quite nice, but as soon as you’re a bit off the optimal pace with these cars, you lose a lot of time per lap,” he explained. His words painted a picture of struggle, emphasizing that the only chance Ferrari has to keep up is to disrupt Mercedes in the early laps. Once they find clear air, as demonstrated in the last race, their true speed becomes evident, and Leclerc estimates that there's still a gap of four to five tenths of a second that Ferrari needs to overcome.

Looking ahead, Leclerc's focus shifts to potential updates that could transform the team's fortunes. “This championship will be all about development and the updates that each team introduces,” he asserted. While acknowledging that Ferrari is in a decent position, he made it crystal clear: “We’re not here just to stand on the podium. We want to win races, which currently seems very difficult because Mercedes is at a very high level.”

Despite the uphill battle, Leclerc remains optimistic about the hard work being put in by the team back at the factory. “I know there are several new developments on the way. Whether this will make a difference or not, I don’t know. I’m pretty sure the others won't be resting either, so it will be tough.”

As the season unfolds, one thing is certain: Ferrari’s hopes of challenging for the title hinge on significant upgrades and a fierce fight against Mercedes. But for now, the message is clear — the Scuderia has a mountain to climb if they want to reclaim their place at the top of Formula 1. The battle lines are drawn, and fans will be watching closely to see if Ferrari can rise to the occasion or if they will continue to trail behind the Silver Arrows.
