Daytona International Speedway delivered its first major wreck of the season—and it was Joey Logano’s No. 22 Ford that set it all off.

After a rain-delayed start, the Daytona 500 was finally back underway, with reigning Cup Series champion Joey Logano leading the charge. But on Lap 71, just moments after the start of Stage 2, everything went sideways—literally.

Logano, who had dominated the early laps, failed to get up to speed on the restart, causing a catastrophic chain reaction that resulted in a multi-car pileup. The carnage collected a star-studded list of contenders, including:

  • Jimmie Johnson
  • Riley Herbst
  • Ross Chastain
  • John Hunter Nemechek
  • Martin Truex Jr.
  • Cole Custer
  • Cody Ware
  • Kyle Busch

For some, the wreck was a minor setback. But for others—especially Kyle Busch—it could be a season-opening disaster.

Kyle Busch’s Earnhardt Dream Slips Away?

Heading into the 2024 Daytona 500, Kyle Busch had one thing on his mind—pulling off a Dale Earnhardt moment.

It’s been 20 years of heartbreak for Busch at Daytona, and the two-time Cup Series champ had hoped to rewrite history by finally securing a win at ‘The Great American Race’—just as Earnhardt did in 1998 after decades of near-misses.

Driving for Richard Childress Racing, Busch even acknowledged the eerie parallel before the race:

“There was another storied racer of the past that won on his 20th try, and that was a pretty big deal. He was a former RCR driver as well, so it’d certainly be nice to win that race and do it with RCR in the No. 8 Zone Chevrolet.”

But Lap 71 may have shattered those dreams.

Busch, caught up in the massive wreck triggered by Logano’s misfire, could now be looking at extensive repairs—if his team can even salvage his race at all.

After going winless in 2023, this was supposed to be a fresh start for Busch, a chance to prove he still belongs at the top of the sport. Now, he’s facing an uphill battle just to finish the race.

Logano’s Daytona Dominance Turns to Disaster

For Joey Logano, this wreck is a tale of two races.

Before Lap 71, he had been the class of the field, leading Stage 1 and showing that Team Penske came to play. But in one moment, everything spiraled out of control.

Restarts at Daytona are always dangerous, but when the leader stumbles, it’s a recipe for disaster.

With the No. 22 Ford failing to fire off, the rest of the field stacked up behind him, creating a domino effect that sent cars spinning and slamming into the wall.

For some drivers, this could be race-ending. For others, it’s a major setback before the crucial final laps.

Daytona: The Equalizer Strikes Again

Year after year, Daytona proves that no one is safe.

  • Kyle Busch came in chasing history. Now, he’s just chasing repairs.
  • Joey Logano looked like the dominant force. Now, he’s the reason for the first ‘Big One’ of the year.
  • Jimmie Johnson, Helio Castroneves, and Martin Truex Jr.—all caught up in the mess.

With plenty of laps left, the question remains: who will survive the madness?

If one thing is certain, it’s this—Daytona isn’t done delivering drama just yet.
