Chandler Smith Faces Uncertain Future: ‘I Could Be Working for My Dad’s Construction Business’

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Chandler Smith opened up about the uncertainty surrounding his NASCAR future after a tough Xfinity race in Miami, admitting that he doesn’t have a guaranteed ride for 2025. The 22-year-old, who has demonstrated potential with consistent top-5 finishes and multiple wins, faces a make-or-break situation with only the Martinsville race left to secure his spot in the championship-4.

“I don’t have a ride next year,” Smith revealed candidly. “I could be working for my dad’s construction business and could be hanging it up at the end of this year.” Smith’s impressive season has been a mix of highs and challenges; despite a strong start and playoff success, he hasn’t been able to clinch crucial wins that would solidify his standing and future in the sport.

Smith’s journey to Joe Gibbs Racing came after a rocky stint with Kaulig Racing in 2023, but his current team took a chance on him, and he feels grateful for the opportunity. “We still had an amazing season this year,” Smith reflected. “Super, super grateful for the opportunity with everybody I was able to work with at Joe Gibbs Racing.” Yet, Smith’s future hinges on more than talent alone, as he faces the financial reality of NASCAR, where a lack of significant sponsorship could sideline a skilled driver like him.

In a sport where sponsorship can be as crucial as speed, Smith’s situation underscores the challenges talented drivers face when navigating limited seats and high costs. With his determination and Joe Gibbs Racing backing him into the final rounds, Smith remains focused on giving his best at Martinsville in hopes of a championship shot. But as Smith’s story highlights, NASCAR risks losing a bright talent if financial backing takes priority over racing skill.
