Carlos Sainz’s Unexpected Path: From Ferrari Star to Williams Revival Project and says Red Bull and Mercedes snubs ‘hurt his driver ego’

After Ferrari’s decision to replace Carlos Sainz with Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season, the Spaniard found himself in a whirlwind of negotiations. While many expected top teams like Mercedes or Red Bull to scoop up the consistent Ferrari performer, both teams ultimately passed on Sainz. This twist led Sainz to a multi-year deal with Williams, where he’s now set to become the centerpiece of the team’s rebuilding strategy.

Reflecting on his journey, Sainz admitted that being overlooked for a competitive seat was a blow to his ego, especially after years of strong performances and adaptability at Ferrari.

“I’ve definitely come to peace with it,” Sainz shared. “I truly believe that if I’m not going there, it’s because life has something else in store for me. It hurt at the time; we all have egos, and I have a driver ego. I couldn’t understand it at first.”

The 30-year-old driver’s performances in 2024 have been commendable, contributing significantly to Ferrari’s results with victories in Australia and Mexico. Yet, the allure of Hamilton joining Ferrari and Red Bull’s decision to extend Sergio Perez’s contract left Sainz without a seat at any of the leading teams.

In the end, Sainz chose Williams, enticed by the team’s historic legacy and a clear vision for future success. He spoke with excitement about this fresh start, eager to reward the team’s faith in him.

“Williams invested in me, they backed me up early on, and that really excites me,” Sainz said. “I can’t wait to go there and work to build something good together.”

Now, with only three races remaining in 2024, Sainz is ready to close out his chapter with Ferrari and embark on a new journey that he hopes will bring resurgence to Williams in 2025. For Sainz, this is more than just a drive; it’s an opportunity to prove himself in a new role, building with a team that shares his drive and determination.
