Carlos Sainz’s Dakar Dreams Shaken: Rollover Derails Defending Champion in Pivotal 48-Hour Stage

Carlos Sainz Sr., a four-time Dakar Rally champion, faced a major setback in his quest to defend his title at the 2025 Dakar Rally after a dramatic rollover during the grueling 48-hour Stage 2. The Spaniard’s Ford Raptor sustained significant damage, leaving him stranded in the Saudi Arabian desert and casting doubt over his ability to stay competitive in the iconic endurance race.

The Incident: A Sudden Turn for the Worse

Sainz, who began the stage in eighth place, was navigating a challenging sandy stretch near the 327-kilometer mark of the near-1000-kilometer test when disaster struck. His Ford Raptor flipped, causing heavy damage to the rear of the car. The crash occurred shortly after he passed the previous checkpoint in 15th place, indicating he was already struggling to maintain pace.

Fellow Ford driver Mitch Guthrie Jr. stopped to assist Sainz, showcasing the camaraderie that defines the Dakar. A video captured by the rally organizer ASO revealed the extent of the damage, with the car’s rear visibly battered from the rollover.

A Costly Recovery

Despite the setback, Sainz managed to get back on track after losing 23 minutes. However, the extent of the damage to his vehicle remains unclear, raising concerns about how it might impact his performance in the remaining stages of the rally. In a race where every second counts, such a delay could prove costly in the fiercely competitive Dakar landscape.

Al-Attiyah’s Strategic Play Pays Off

While Sainz struggled, Nasser Al-Attiyah capitalized on his tactical gamble from Stage 1. The five-time Dakar champion deliberately compromised his result on Saturday to secure a more favorable starting position for the 48-hour stage. The strategy appeared to pay off, as Al-Attiyah led the stage at the 325-kilometer mark, showcasing the importance of strategy in the world’s toughest rally.

The Road Ahead

The 48-hour stage, often regarded as one of the most grueling tests in the Dakar Rally, is a critical juncture for competitors. With no overnight assistance allowed, drivers must rely on their resourcefulness and mechanical skills to overcome any obstacles. For Sainz, the road ahead looks uncertain as he contends with both the physical toll of the crash and the potential mechanical limitations of his damaged Ford Raptor.

A Race Full of Twists

The 2025 Dakar Rally continues to live up to its reputation for unpredictability and relentless challenges. While Sainz’s hopes of a fifth title hang in the balance, the rally is far from over. With more than a week of racing ahead, the veteran champion may yet find a way to recover—though his rivals, like Al-Attiyah, will be eager to seize the opportunity.
