Former rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr. is eyeing a bold move into the world of motorsport governance by considering a run for the presidency of the FIA. The veteran driver, who clinched victory in the Dakar Rally in 2024 at the age of 63, is contemplating challenging the incumbent Mohammed Ben Sulayem in the upcoming elections.

Sainz reveals that his extensive experience in motorsport has fueled his desire to give back to the sport that has shaped his life. Confident in his capabilities, he envisions assembling a top-notch team to drive positive change within the FIA and the automotive industry as a whole.

Despite his son, Carlos Sainz Jr., competing in Formula 1, Sainz Sr. is adamant that there would be no conflict of interest if he assumes the role of FIA president. He emphasizes that his track record and reputation speak for themselves, assuring that any potential changes in his relationship with his son would not impede his ability to lead with integrity.

As the first contender to throw his hat into the ring, Sainz sets the stage for a potentially riveting electoral battle against Ben Sulayem, whose leadership has been marred by controversy and internal turmoil. Amid speculations of senior officials leaving the FIA and criticisms of the organization’s practices, the upcoming elections promise to be a pivotal moment for the future of motorsport governance.

With Sainz Sr.’s ambition to steer the FIA towards a new era of progress and innovation, the motorsport community eagerly awaits the unfolding drama of the presidential race, poised for a showdown between two prominent figures in the world of racing.
