Carlos Sainz Reflects on His Fierce Rivalry with Max Verstappen: A Tale of Youthful Intensity and Missed Opportunities

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - OCTOBER 26: Pole position qualifier Carlos Sainz of Spain and Ferrari and Second placed qualifier Max Verstappen of the Netherlands and Oracle Red Bull Racing attend the press conference after qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Mexico at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez on October 26, 2024 in Mexico City, Mexico. Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen have been linked since their shared debut in Formula 1 in 2015. Both were thrust into the spotlight as teammates at Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri), where their relationship was shaped by the intense, cutthroat environment fostered by the Red Bull junior team. While their careers have since diverged drastically—Verstappen becoming a dominant four-time world champion and Sainz battling for consistency—Sainz recently opened up about the roots of their rivalry and the challenging circumstances that defined their rookie season.

The Battle for Red Bull: A Rivalry Born in Chaos

Sainz candidly criticized Red Bull’s management style during their time at Toro Rosso, pointing out how the team deliberately fueled an intense duel between him and Verstappen. The objective? To determine who would earn the coveted promotion to Red Bull Racing.

“With Max, there was rivalry, but at that team (Toro Rosso), they wanted to create a duel at all costs to determine who could go to Red Bull. We were 17 and 20 years old, still immature.”

This manufactured rivalry put both drivers under immense pressure at a time when they were still finding their footing in Formula 1. While Verstappen ultimately won the promotion, leading to his meteoric rise with Red Bull, Sainz’s career took a more winding path. Yet, Sainz harbors no ill will toward Verstappen, maintaining a respectful relationship with the Dutchman despite their rocky beginnings.

Contrasting Fortunes

Since their rookie season, Verstappen and Sainz’s careers have taken dramatically different trajectories:

  • Max Verstappen: After moving to Red Bull in 2016, Verstappen quickly cemented his status as one of the sport’s brightest talents. His dominance since 2021 has placed him among the all-time greats, with four consecutive championships.
  • Carlos Sainz: Despite flashes of brilliance, Sainz’s career has been defined by inconsistency and team changes. His time at Ferrari highlighted his resilience but also his struggles, particularly in adapting to the ground-effect regulations introduced in 2022.

“The beginning of 2022, I thought I couldn’t drive anymore. I had to completely change my style and after that I became much stronger.”

Sainz’s adaptability allowed him to improve over time, but his performances at Ferrari were often overshadowed by teammate Charles Leclerc, who seemed more naturally attuned to the car’s characteristics.

A New Chapter for Sainz

As Sainz heads into the 2025 season with Williams, he faces a new challenge: rebuilding a team from the ground up. The Spaniard is determined to make the most of this opportunity, though he acknowledges that competing at the sharp end of the grid may be out of reach for the next few years.

Meanwhile, Verstappen remains firmly entrenched as Red Bull’s undisputed No. 1 driver, continuing to set the standard in Formula 1. The contrasting paths of these two drivers highlight not only their individual journeys but also the impact of Red Bull’s development system on their careers.

What Could Have Been

Sainz’s reflections on his time with Verstappen at Toro Rosso shed light on the pressures young drivers face in Formula 1’s most demanding environments. While Verstappen thrived, Sainz’s trajectory was shaped by a series of near-misses and challenges. Yet, his resilience and determination have kept him in the sport, earning him respect as one of the grid’s most capable drivers.

The question lingers: What might have happened if Sainz had received the same opportunities as Verstappen? While the answer remains speculative, Sainz’s journey is a testament to perseverance in the face of adversity—and a reminder of the human stories behind the high-stakes world of Formula 1.
