Carlos Sainz Slapped with €20,000 Fine for Disrespecting National Anthem Despite Illness Before Japanese GP
Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz faced a hefty €20,000 fine from FIA stewards for failing to be in place for the national anthem ahead of the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix. The Williams driver, who has been struggling with his new Grove machinery this season, was late due to a stomach issue, as confirmed by Dr. Messina of Med-Ex who administered medication to him before the race.
Sainz was found to be “not in place for the National Anthem at the specified time of 1344hrs,” a direct breach of Article 19.4 b) of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations. Despite the mitigating circumstances of his illness, he was still handed a €20,000 fine, with €10,000 suspended for a year.
“The Driver arrived at the National Anthem Position after the Anthem had commenced,” the stewards pointed out, emphasizing the importance of showing respect for the host country’s anthem and the regulations regarding the timing of such protocols.
The report highlighted the significance of upholding respect for the national anthem, stressing that all individuals involved must meticulously plan to be in position on time. Due to the circumstances, Sainz avoided a more severe penalty of €60,000.
This incident serves as a reminder to all drivers to prioritize punctuality and respect for national symbols, even in the face of unexpected challenges.
