In a dramatic turn of events, Williams F1 star Carlos Sainz has publicly aired his grievances over a contentious FIA penalty that has left the racing world buzzing. Fresh off a tumultuous weekend at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), where Sainz was forced to retire after a collision with Kimi Antonelli, the Spaniard is not holding back as he prepares for the Mexican Grand Prix.

The incident at COTA triggered a frenzy of discussions, as Sainz’s attempted overtake at Turn 15 ended in disaster, leading to contact that not only derailed his race but also impacted Antonelli, who limped home in P13. In a shocking twist, the FIA slapped Sainz with a hefty five-place grid penalty for the upcoming race in Mexico City, a decision that has sparked outrage among fans and pundits alike.

During a fiery press conference in the heart of Mexico City, Sainz faced a barrage of questions regarding the fallout from the COTA incident. When asked about his relationship with Antonelli post-collision, he candidly stated, “Yeah. Why? For me, what happens on track always stays on track.” However, the mood shifted dramatically as he discussed the penalty, which he deemed “completely disproportionate” to the nature of the incident.

Sainz did not shy away from expressing his disbelief, stating, “It exposes a bit the weaknesses in the rules that we have. But it is what it is. I have to take it. I obviously assume my responsibility or my share of responsibility for the incident.” His frustration was palpable, as he reflected on the decision-making process that led to the penalty. “I wish we could have both continued the race, but honestly after looking at the data and all the onboards, the fact that they still decided to give me five places is difficult to understand, difficult to accept – but whatever, I’ll take it,” he lamented.

The drama intensified when Antonelli was given the floor to share his perspective. While he acknowledged the unfortunate nature of the incident, he maintained a different viewpoint, stating, “It was a shame because we were both in a decent position and obviously with the contact, we basically ended both of our races.” He refrained from delving deeper into the crash, leaving fans wondering about the true nature of their on-track rivalry. “Carlos has his view, but it is what it is. Now we move on,” he concluded.

As the Mexican Grand Prix approaches, the tension is palpable.
