Carlos Sainz believes that even the smallest improvement in performance could be the determining factor for a victory in the intense battle against Red Bull. Red Bull’s dominance in Formula 1 has decreased, with Ferrari and McLaren significantly closing the gap on the team based in Milton Keynes this season. In fact, Sainz was of the opinion that a minimal upgrade could be the key to winning a Grand Prix this year.
Sainz pointed out that the last two races in Imola and Miami were on “standard tracks”. During those weekends, Ferrari was only slightly behind McLaren, with a difference of about half a tenth. Furthermore, Sainz believed that Ferrari was perhaps one or two tenths behind Red Bull. Therefore, even a small improvement in car development, like a minimal upgrade package, could make a significant difference for Ferrari and potentially lead them to victory in certain races.
Both Ferrari and McLaren have won one race each in the last three stages, indicating a convergence in car development under current regulations. This has made it more challenging for Max Verstappen to surpass his rivals based solely on speed. However, Sainz still acknowledged that Red Bull had the advantage in this battle.
According to Sainz, it is reasonable to assume that Red Bull will still be the favorite on more traditional circuits. However, he hoped that Verstappen’s domination would no longer be the norm. Sainz even hinted at the possibility of a title fight between Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren.
While Red Bull will be introducing upgrades in the upcoming races to regain their position at the front of the grid, fans can expect to watch more races where Verstappen struggles to secure victory throughout the year.
