Sergio Perez, from Red Bull Racing RB20, competed in the Bahrain Grand Prix, the first race of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship. Carlos Sainz expressed his belief that the upcoming season will present challenges at certain tracks due to the new rule related to the Drag Reduction System (DRS). Since its introduction in 2011, drivers have been allowed to adjust the opening of the rear wing flap to increase their maximum speed after the second lap. However, for the 2024 campaign, a regulatory change was implemented, allowing drivers to use the DRS after the first lap of the race. This rule also applies to the second lap after a Safety Car period, as long as the driver is within one second of the car ahead at the DRS detection point. Sergio Perez used the DRS to his advantage, moving from fifth to second place in Bahrain. He believes that this rule change will bring a unique style of racing at street circuits. When asked about the impact of the change, Perez stated: “When you’re in a fight, you immediately get the DRS. Like I saw Carlos, he lost the DRS at the beginning and was out of the fight for a while. And the car ahead going straight into clean air, basically it’s going alone. He has to use his tires more. So it’s a bit disadvantageous if you’re fighting, I think, in places like Baku or even Jeddah, you know, having this kind of… I think the race will be different. It creates a difference for the car ahead in the early laps. So yeah, it will be interesting. I think the whole first stint between Mercedes, Ferrari, and myself was very close. So I think this change in the DRS is making a difference.”

Carlos Sainz emphasized the delicate balance needed to avoid overheating the tires while striving to get into the DRS zone, a strategy he executed perfectly to secure a spot on the podium in Bahrain.

“I believe strategic thinking plays a significant role, especially considering how susceptible the tires are to aggressive driving,” commented Sainz.

“So, on one hand, you want to apply pressure to escape the DRS or gain access to it. On the other hand, you also want to preserve the tires, as we all know how vulnerable they are during the early laps when pushed to the limit. It’s a fine line to walk.

“Once I realized I wasn’t under pressure from behind, I made the decision to manage my tires, and it worked. Instead of getting involved in the DRS battle, I was able to overtake my opponents easily.

“And yes, it will depend on the characteristics of each track. Facing a 24-race season like this will certainly present challenges. We experienced that during the Sprint last year.

“So yes, it will be a test, but it adds another intriguing aspect to consider.”

Max Verstappen dominated the season opener, securing an impressive victory with a commanding lead of 22 seconds. However, the Dutch driver echoed the sentiments of Pérez and Sainz regarding potential changes in the race dynamics in 2024.

“From my point of view as well, determining the appropriate level of aggressiveness is crucial. Charles, for example, had the opportunity to use the DRS at least once during the first lap,” he observed. “But of course, you want to push while preserving your tires. Therefore, making that decision will be quite challenging on certain tracks, as the DRS can be an incredibly powerful tool, potentially leading to battles or intriguing situations.”
