Carl Edwards Teases NASCAR Return After Kyle Larson’s Surprise Challenge

With the Daytona 500 fast approaching, the NASCAR rumor mill is spinning out of control. While Jimmie Johnson and Martin Truex Jr. are making headlines with their part-time comebacks, the real wild card could be none other than Carl Edwards—the former “Fittest Man in NASCAR” who walked away at his peak in 2016.

And now, thanks to Kyle Larson, the buzz around an Edwards return has reached a fever pitch.

Kyle Larson Wants Carl Edwards in His Car—And Edwards Has the Perfect Response

Larson, a driver who thrives on pushing boundaries, is set to take on the Indy 500-Coca-Cola 600 double in 2025 after his first attempt in 2024 was derailed by weather. That means while he’s racing at Indianapolis, his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet will be sitting idle for the NASCAR All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway.

So, who does Larson think should step in? Carl Edwards.

“I would love to have Carl Edwards do it,” Larson told FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass. “He’s one of the greatest drivers of all time, and it’d be awesome to see him back in a car, even if it’s just for practice.”

For a driver who hasn’t raced in nearly a decade, the request caught Edwards off guard. And his response? Classic Carl—a mix of humility, humor, and just enough mystery to keep the speculation alive.

“Okay, so there’s two sides, right?” Edwards said. “There’s the ‘Oh my gosh, Kyle Larson’—I mean, he’s the baddest driver in the world. That car, that team, it would be so much fun to do the race.”

“But then the realist in me is like, you haven’t driven a race car for eight years, you’ll screw it all up and it’ll be terrible.”

Then came the kicker:

“Hey Kyle, you’re messing with me! I’m gonna get ya back one way or another. No, really, it’s an honor.”

The Last Time Carl Edwards Was in a NASCAR Car…

The last time Edwards raced in NASCAR, he was 10 laps away from a championship.

Just like that, Edwards’ dream of a NASCAR Cup Series championship was gone. And instead of coming back for another shot, he did something almost unheard of—he walked away.

For years, fans have begged for his return, but Edwards has stayed firm:

“I don’t regret leaving.”

“I could have probably done it better.”

“Never a Total No” – Could Edwards Actually Return?

So, could Larson’s invitation for practice be the push Carl Edwards needs?

“It’s never a total no,” Edwards admitted. “I like options. That is kinda interesting, but I’d have to go run the sim or something like that and see if I can even get around [North Wilkesboro Speedway].”

For now, he’s not fully committing, but the door is cracked open just enough to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

“Nobody [at Hendrick Motorsports] officially talked to me about it. It’s no for now, but I’d drive a sim and check it out.”

Final Take: Will We See Carl Edwards Suit Up Again?

The odds of Carl Edwards making a full-blown NASCAR comeback are still incredibly slim—but even the slightest chance is enough to get fans buzzing.

Would he be rusty? Absolutely. He even joked:

“I’m very likely to crash a car if I were to get in one right now.”

But could he shock the world and take the wheel, even just for a practice session? If Kyle Larson has his way, the answer might just be yes.

For now, it’s a waiting game—but one thing is certain: NASCAR fans aren’t giving up hope just yet.
