Can Verstappen overcome the M curse in Montreal?

Verstappen consegue superar a maldição do M em Montreal?

In the past three races, there have been three different winners. This is a stark contrast to last year’s Formula 1 season, where the Red Bull’s triple world champion dominated by winning 19 out of 22 races. However, in the last six races, the Red Bull champion has failed to secure victory in three of them. Interestingly, the street circuits in Melbourne, Miami, and Monaco have been particularly disappointing for Red Bull. Their star driver, Max Verstappen, is determined to break this streak and secure a win in Montreal.

On the other hand, Ferrari has had success in Australia with Carlos Sainz and in Monaco with Charles Leclerc. They are hopeful that their luck will continue in Montreal, especially considering that the circuit is named after their legendary driver, Gilles Villeneuve.

Verstappen has not suffered consecutive defeats since July 2022. He managed to win in Japan after Australia and in Imola after Miami. However, he has identified a weakness in his driving technique – going over curbs. This weakness was exposed in Monaco. The next race in Montreal, known for its fast track and curbs that can provide time advantages, may present similar challenges for Verstappen.

Verstappen frankly admitted: “We have been facing this issue since 2022. In the last two years, the superiority of our car has somewhat masked this weakness, as we gained an advantage in corners where curbs and bumps were not limiting factors. However, as everyone closes in, it becomes evident that we need to improve our weakest point.”

Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez, had a disappointing race in Monaco, exiting the competition after an accident. However, he received good news earlier in the week when Red Bull announced a two-year contract extension for him.

The boss of Ferrari, Fred Vasseur, predicted another intense battle in Canada between the red cars and the scarlet cars, as well as McLaren. Ferrari is now behind Red Bull by just 24 points and has scored points with both cars in every race, unlike their competitors. Meanwhile, Leclerc is 31 points behind Verstappen.

“It’s almost the complete opposite of Monaco in terms of speed, but still has the characteristics of the kerbs, with several low-speed corners and chicanes,” Vasseur told journalists in Monaco.

“Some corners are similar to Monaco, but overall, we did well in Melbourne, did a good job in Imola, and stood out in Miami with different tire compounds and track surfaces. It will be a close fight,” he emphasized.

McLaren is also aiming to remain competitive after securing four consecutive podiums, including Lando Norris’ victory in Miami and Oscar Piastri’s second place in Monaco.

“Our car has performed impressively on various types of circuits, but we understand that we may face challenges in Canada,” Norris said. “Our rivals are expected to be strong here.”

Canada marks the return of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes to the track where he claimed his first of 103 victories in 2007 as a McLaren driver.

“Both drivers will have the updated front wing in Canada, along with other development items for this event,” team principal Toto Wolff said.

“The new front wing provided a slight improvement in lap time on the narrow streets of Monaco and should offer even greater benefits on future circuits.”

Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll is the only Canadian participant in the race, but he has yet to finish above ninth place at his home circuit. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin)
