Dane Cameron, the victorious driver of #7 Porsche Penske 963, mentioned how the scorching track surface gave him an advantage during the initial rainy conditions at the 2024 Six Hours of the Glen.
The sixth round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship was particularly notable for its rainy conditions. Rain occurred in the middle of the race, followed by a heavy storm later on, which led to a red flag in the final hour.
Unlike their GTP rivals, the #7 team adopted a different pit strategy. They took advantage of the rain break, allowing a large portion of the track to dry as the temperature rose to over 35 degrees Celsius.
Cameron, who opted for slick tires during a double stint when the rain started, expressed during the post-race press conference that surviving these critical moments is crucial. He also mentioned that the decision to choose slicks helped them gain an advantage after initially falling behind at the start of the race.
Making the right decision in such circumstances is challenging, as the safe choice would be rain tires. However, it may not always be the ideal option. Due to the track layout and weather patterns, rain often falls in specific areas.
At the time, it seemed like they had a bit of bad luck and made the wrong decision. It seemed fine with only small amounts of rain. However, suddenly, there was a heavy storm at the front of the track. Then it turned yellow, indicating that it would soon dry out, and they would be in a good position.
Their out-of-sequence strategy took some time to unfold. According to radio communication, it seemed like some other drivers were certain it would rain and chose rain tires, but it didn’t work out for them.
The hot track provided them with an advantage, giving them time until the arrival of heavy rain. These moments were challenging, and their focus was to keep the car on the track, knowing that the race was only halfway through and that the decision they made was not yet a winner. However, they managed to navigate through this moment, move forward, and in the end, Felipe Nasr performed well.
Cameron and Nasr, leaders of the championship standings, extended their advantage to 2044 points at Watkins Glen. However, they are still closely pursued by Sebastien Bourdais and Renger van der Zande in the #01 Cadillac V-Series.R duo, who finished in second place and maintained a narrow difference.
This victory at Watkins Glen marked Cameron and Nasr’s second win of the year, following their triumph at the Daytona 24 Hours. Additionally, it was their second victory at the same venue.
The battle for the championship continues to intensify, as Porsche will need to overcome the #01 Cadillac in the Road America sprint race on August 4th.
