The China Aviation Lithium Battery Technology (CALB) continues to be committed to the construction of a lithium battery factory in Sines, in the district of Setúbal, for electric vehicles, and the project is now open for public consultation until the end of February on the Participa portal.
The project, which involves an investment of over two billion euros, aims at the “construction and operation of a lithium battery production unit in the lands of the Industrial and Logistics Zone of Sines (ZILS)”, in an area of 100 hectares.
The lithium battery production unit is expected to occupy approximately 45 hectares and “will have a capacity of 15 GWh, equivalent to 38.6 million cells per year, with the aim of meeting the high demand from customers (mainly from the automotive industry), and it is expected to start production by the end of 2025”.
The project for the industrial unit includes the construction of five buildings for electrode production, cell manufacturing, formation and assembly, packaging, and casing manufacturing.
It is worth mentioning that in 2022, CALB signed a memorandum of understanding with AICEP Global Parques, which included the acquisition of “surface rights, with the aim of building a world-class, highly intelligent, computerized, and zero-carbon emissions factory”.
