Official: Formula 1 reaches agreement with GM/Cadillac for 11th team

Cadillac is set to shake up Formula 1 in 2026, joining the grid with two new slots and marking the first expansion to 22 cars since 2016. This development signifies a growing American influence in F1, exciting fans and opening doors for fresh talent, experienced veterans, and bold partnerships. But with only two coveted seats, the big question looms: who will Cadillac choose to spearhead their inaugural lineup?

Why Cadillac’s entry matters

The arrival of Cadillac represents more than just two extra cars on the grid—it’s a statement. Formula 1’s expansion into the U.S. market has been accelerating, fueled by the success of Netflix’s Drive to Survive, new circuits like Miami and Las Vegas, and a surge in American fans. Cadillac’s participation solidifies this momentum, signaling the sport’s increasing global reach and commercial appeal.

For fans, this also means heightened competition and new opportunities to engage with the sport. Promotions, bonuses like DraftKings promo codes, and the thrill of witnessing a fresh contender make the 2026 season a must-watch event.

The potential driver pool

Building a competitive team from scratch is no easy feat, and Cadillac will need a balance of seasoned expertise, youthful talent, and commercial viability to thrive in F1’s cutthroat environment. Let’s break down the likely candidates:

1. Valtteri Bottas

With 10 Grand Prix victories and over a decade of experience in F1, Bottas is a prime candidate to lead Cadillac. His proven consistency and ability to provide detailed feedback could lay the groundwork for the team’s development. As a known quantity in the paddock, Bottas offers stability and credibility for a team aiming to hit the ground running.

2. Sergio Perez

Currently with Red Bull, Perez brings a wealth of experience and significant commercial appeal, particularly in the Americas. His ability to deliver under pressure and his widespread fan base make him an ideal choice for Cadillac, especially as the team looks to establish a strong presence in F1’s growing U.S. fanbase.

3. Daniel Ricciardo

The Australian fan favorite and Drive to Survive star would be a marketing dream for Cadillac. With eight Grand Prix wins and a magnetic personality, Ricciardo could boost the team’s profile while providing valuable experience. After a challenging few years, Ricciardo may also relish the opportunity to rebuild his career with a fresh project.

4. Young talents and rookies

Cadillac may also look to the next generation of drivers to secure their future. Rising stars like Theo Pourchaire, Jack Doohan, or Frederik Vesti could offer the team a long-term investment in raw talent. Partnering a rookie with an experienced veteran would give Cadillac the best of both worlds: immediate reliability and a developmental prospect.

What Cadillac needs in a driver

As Cadillac evaluates its options, several factors will weigh heavily in the decision:

  1. Experience: A new team needs at least one seasoned driver to lead development and provide direction.
  2. Commercial appeal: Drivers with a strong fanbase or marketability can help Cadillac establish its brand in a crowded F1 paddock.
  3. Team-building ability: A successful driver for a new team must have a collaborative mindset and be willing to work through the inevitable growing pains.
  4. Track performance: Consistency and speed remain non-negotiable in the high-stakes world of F1.

The stakes are high

Cadillac’s entry into Formula 1 is more than just a sporting milestone; it’s a cultural and commercial shift. Fans are eager to see who will seize the opportunity to write their names into the history books as part of this groundbreaking project.

Will it be a seasoned veteran like Bottas or Perez? A fan-favorite comeback for Ricciardo? Or a gamble on the next big talent in motorsport?

Whatever the decision, Cadillac’s presence promises to add intrigue, competition, and excitement to the 2026 Formula 1 season.
