Cadillac’s Bold Move: Powering F1 Cars with Ferrari Engines for 3 Years

General Motors Delays Entry into F1 to 2029, Cadillac to Use Ferrari Engine for 3 Years

Buckle up, racing fans, as General Motors is set to make a grand entrance into the world of Formula 1, albeit with a slight delay. The American automotive giant will be debuting its power unit in the high-speed sport starting from the 2029 season, a year later than initially planned. The FIA has officially given the green light to General Motors as an engine manufacturer for the prestigious racing series.

Cadillac, a luxury division of General Motors, will benefit from this delay by utilizing Ferrari engines for three consecutive years, from 2026 to 2028. This strategic move not only aligns with existing agreements but also showcases the complexities and considerations involved in developing a Formula 1 engine from scratch.

In an exhilarating twist, the FIA released a statement confirming General Motors’ approval as a power unit constructor for the Cadillac Formula 1 Team, slated to compete from the 2029 season onwards. The Cadillac team will initially rely on Ferrari engines until General Motors’ own engines are ready for competitive use.

President Mohammed Ben Sulayem expressed his enthusiasm for the expansion of the Formula 1 grid, emphasizing the importance of welcoming new talents and opportunities to the sport. He highlighted the arduous yet rewarding process that has culminated in General Motors’ upcoming participation, marking a significant milestone in the global growth of Formula 1.

The entry of General Motors as an authorized power unit supplier from 2029 onward underscores the increasing interest from global automotive manufacturers in Formula 1. Their commitment to innovation, sustainability, and competition mirrors the FIA’s vision for the future of the sport, aiming to enhance accessibility and inclusivity while advancing technology and engaging with a diverse fan base worldwide.
