Cadillac shakes up F1: 2026 qualifying format unveiled as grid expands to 22 cars

2026 F1 Qualifying Revolution: Cadillac Joins the Fray with More Cars and a New Format!

Get ready, Formula 1 fans! The 2026 season is gearing up to be a game-changer as Cadillac makes its thrilling entrance onto the grid, bringing the total number of cars to a staggering 22. This monumental addition isn’t just a milestone for the American automotive giant; it heralds a significant shift in the qualifying format that has captivated audiences worldwide. Buckle up, because qualifying as we know it is about to get an electrifying upgrade!

In a bold move, F1 has retained its beloved three-part knockout structure for qualifying, but the introduction of two additional cars means some tweaks are in order to keep the competition fierce and fair. The FIA has confirmed that the battle for pole position in Q3 will still feature the top 10 fastest cars, ensuring that every millisecond counts in this high-octane showdown.

Here’s how the new qualifying format will unfold under the 2026 sporting regulations:

Q1: Lasting 18 minutes, all 22 cars will hit the track with the clock ticking down. However, only the six slowest drivers will face elimination at the end of this session, leaving 16 drivers vying for a spot in Q2.

Q2: The stakes get higher in this 15-minute segment as the remaining 16 competitors push themselves to the limit. Again, six drivers will be cut, with the top 10 advancing to the ultimate showdown in Q3.

Q3: The grand finale lasts 12 exhilarating minutes where the top 10 will battle for the coveted pole position. No slow laps here—only the fastest times will secure the front row for the race ahead!

But wait, it gets even more intense! According to the regulations, lap times recorded by eliminated drivers in Q1 and Q2 will be erased at the end of each session, meaning there’s no room for error—drivers must deliver their best on the first attempt.

Additionally, the sprint qualifying sessions will mirror these changes, albeit with shorter timeframes, ensuring that every moment counts in this thrilling format overhaul.

Critics might argue that with 22 cars, qualifying isn’t drastically reinvented, but the thrill of having six drivers eliminated in the early rounds injects a new layer of suspense and excitement! The quest for pole position remains as fierce as ever, and fans can expect nail-biting action as teams and drivers fight for every valuable position on the grid.

As we gear up for the 2026 season, one thing is clear: the addition of Cadillac and the refined qualifying format will elevate the stakes, making Formula 1 more exciting and unpredictable than ever before. Get ready for a season filled with adrenaline, as the fight for supremacy on the track reaches new heights!
