Cadillac F1’s Vision for 2026: Prioritizing American Talent and Revolutionizing the Grid

Who Will Drive for General Motors’ Cadillac F1 Team in 2026?

In a significant leap forward for Cadillac’s Formula 1 division, the team has emphasized the importance of selecting the right American driver for their debut line-up in 2026. The team is not simply looking to fill the seat with an American for the sake of it, but rather, to ensure that they invest in talent primed for success in the highly competitive world of F1 racing.

Dan Towriss, Cadillac F1’s chief and the newly appointed head of TWG Global’s emerging motorsports wing, made the announcement. Cadillac F1’s formation, which was backed by parent company General Motors and US group TWG Global, is a major expansion, building on their acceptance onto the Formula 1 grid from 2026.

As the current Formula 1 season draws to a close under its existing regulations, Cadillac F1 is looking ahead to the future, gearing up for their grand entry into the sport under the revised 2026 ruleset. One of the primary focuses before their debut is identifying the right drivers.

Towriss spoke to Sky Sports News about the team’s ambition to have an American driver in their 2026 line-up, a goal that remains a priority. “We would love to see an American driver in Formula 1, but we certainly want to make sure we do it the right way. It’s crucially important that that person is set up for success. It won’t be a process of just grabbing an American and sticking him behind the wheel,” he said.

While one seat of the Cadillac F1 vehicle is earmarked for an American racer, the team is also keen on incorporating experienced talent for their second driver. Colton Herta, a standout from IndyCar, is a front-runner to cross over to Formula 1 with Cadillac. Despite his limited F1 experience, Herta’s test sessions with McLaren in 2022 reportedly left a strong impression.

Another potential candidate for Cadillac F1 is Jak Crawford, a former Red Bull junior and Formula 2 driver. Despite his lack of F1 experience, Crawford brings in-depth knowledge of the tracks and familiarity with the lower Formula series.

Towriss emphasized the importance of experience when setting up a new team. “We’re definitely looking at bringing some experience to the driver tandem. There are a number of American drivers who have experience in the lower Formula series,” he stated.

The groundwork for the new team was laid by Andretti Global and its founder Michael Andretti. Following an initial rejection from Formula One Management, the team was accepted as Cadillac F1 shortly after Andretti stepped away. The Andretti family continues to have a presence on the team, with Michael’s father, 1978 World Champion Mario Andretti, serving on the board of directors.

Mario also confirmed Herta’s position as the top choice for the team. “He’s done some F1 testing. Zak Brown [McLaren Racing CEO] gave him a good test at Portimao in Portugal [in 2022]. You should see the report that we got from Andrea Stella [McLaren team principal]. And Andrea Stella is an individual that says it like it is,” he told Motorsport.com.

The Cadillac F1 team will initially use the Ferrari engine, with General Motors planning to manufacture its own F1 power unit in the future. The creation of a dedicated new motorsports arm at TWG, including Cadillac F1, represents a major boost for the company. This new division is designed to drive competitive excellence and commercial innovation on a global scale.

Towriss is excited about the collaboration across teams, promising to bring something fresh to the Formula 1 world. “We really want to bring something new to the Formula 1 world. You shouldn’t expect a cookie cutter Formula 1 team from this new Cadillac F1 team. We’re going to have a lot to offer and we’re going to be thinking about this on the global scale that is Formula 1 and not just focused on the US,” he said.
