Cadillac F1’s Rocky Road: Bottas and Perez Shake Off Rust as Andretti Hails Progress

In a thrilling new chapter for Formula 1, Cadillac has officially stomped onto the scene, and the excitement is palpable! With the legendary Mario Andretti at the helm, this rookie team is making waves, but not without its struggles. As the dust settles from their inaugural races, it becomes clear that veteran drivers Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez are facing significant challenges as they shake off the cobwebs of their time away from the grid.

Andretti, the 1978 World Champion and now a board member for Cadillac F1, pulled no punches in assessing the situation. He candidly stated that both Bottas and Perez are still “a bit rusty,” navigating the complexities of their new machines while ensuring they don’t burden the team with unnecessary problems. There’s a notable lack of “downforce, especially rear end stability,” which has been a sticking point for the drivers as they seek to enhance performance.

But don’t count Cadillac out! They’ve already halved their performance gap between the Australian Grand Prix and the recent race in Shanghai – a commendable feat that signals potential. Andretti expressed immense pride in Cadillac’s debut, stating, “There had been a lot of anxiety, no question. But there we were, and everyone just looking forward… Cadillac looked like they belong in every way.” The execution and presentation of the team, bolstered by experienced figures like team principal Graeme Lowdon and consultant Pat Symonds, have provided a solid foundation for future success.

The numbers tell a story of progression. At the Chinese Grand Prix, Bottas achieved Cadillac’s best finish yet, crossing the line in 13th place, while Perez secured 15th, marking a crucial milestone with both cars reaching the chequered flag. Andretti continues to hold high hopes: “The second race was definitely a little bit better… instead of being four seconds off the pace, they were two seconds off the pace, which is a lot, but it’s an improvement.”

Bringing back seasoned racers like Bottas, a ten-time Grand Prix winner, and Perez, a six-time winner, was a strategic move by Cadillac. However, Andretti notes that both drivers need time to adapt after being away from competitive racing. “They’re both just a little bit rusty,” he emphasized. With this new package, they are meticulously working to avoid setbacks that could hinder their progress.

Yet, the challenges remain. The duo is grappling with how to harness the power unit effectively, balancing battery charge and performance. Andretti pointed out that they are not alone in this struggle, noting that almost every team outside of the frontrunners, Mercedes and Ferrari, is wrestling with similar issues. “It’s going to be an interesting progress of the season,” he remarked, hinting at the fierce competition ahead.

As Cadillac’s first Formula 1 car, the MAC-26, takes to the track, Andretti is not just a figurehead but a guiding presence. “They’re just being very nice to me,” he said, reflecting on the team's approach to his expertise. He remains available for insights and discussions, ensuring his legacy continues to influence the sport he loves.

With the season still in its infancy, the road ahead for Cadillac F1 is filled with both challenges and opportunities. The team is determined to refine their performance and carve out their niche in the high-octane world of Formula 1. As Bottas and Perez work to regain their rhythm, all eyes will be on Cadillac to see if they can transform their early struggles into a thrilling comeback story. Buckle up, F1 fans—this journey is just getting started!
