BYD continues its rise in electric vehicle sales worldwide, and it has now been revealed that in Japan, the Chinese automaker has surpassed the giant Toyota.
In 2024, the Japanese market sold 59,736 fully electric vehicles, representing a 33% decline compared to 2023, marking the first decline in the Japanese market in four years.
In this context, and according to data from the Japan Automobile Dealer Association, BYD sold 2,223 electric vehicles in 2024, a 54% increase compared to the previous year, while Toyota’s sales of fully electric models fell by 30% to 2,038 units.
Nissan is the leader in the Japanese market, controlling about 50% of electric vehicle sales. However, sales of the Nissan Leaf dropped by 44% to 30,749 units, the lowest number since 2021. Meanwhile, sales of the Sakura, an electric kei car, a small model that incorporates the iconic Japanese minicars, fell by 38% to 22,926 units.
