BYD announced that it achieved record sales of 514,809 new energy vehicles in December, bringing the total sales for 2024 to 4,272,145 units, which represents a 41.3% increase compared to the 3 million recorded in 2023.
The new monthly sales record in the last month of 2024 is justified, according to “Bloomberg,” by new subsidies and additional incentives for purchasing electric vehicles.
This is the first time BYD has sold over 4 million vehicles annually, thereby narrowing the gap with Tesla in the “race” for leadership in the 100% electric vehicle market.
Of the total sales accumulated in 2024, BYD announced that 1,764,992 were 100% electric models, a 12% increase compared to the 1.6 million recorded in 2023. Fully electric vehicles accounted for 41.5% of BYD’s total sales in 2024.
The Shenzhen-based manufacturer in China also sold 2,485,378 plug-in hybrid passenger vehicles, representing a 72.8% increase compared to the 1.4 million recorded in 2023. Plug-in hybrids accounted for 58.5% of BYD’s total sales in 2024.
It is worth noting that Tesla will reveal its fourth-quarter sales data for 2024 at the end of this week. However, it is already known that the brand led by Elon Musk needs to deliver at least 515,000 vehicles in the last three months of 2024 to meet the goal of achieving annual sales of 1.81 million units, which would be a quarterly record for the company.
