The Buccaneers may need a backup plan for their quarterback position if Baker Mayfield decides to leave for a higher salary. In that case, they could turn to Tampa native and potential first-round NFL Draft prospect, Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. According to SiriusXM NFL Radio co-host Amber Theoharis via JoeBucsFan.com, Mayfield could be looking for the highest possible pay in free agency.
Penix’s potential acquisition would also present a “polarizing” decision for the Buccaneers. Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports described Penix as the “most polarizing quarterback prospect” in the draft, if not ever. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic also mentioned on “The Rich Eisen Show” in January that Penix could potentially be a first-round pick or not get picked at all. Despite throwing for over 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns in each of the past two seasons, Penix has had to overcome two ACL tears and shoulder injuries during his six-year college career.
With the No. 26 pick in the draft, the Buccaneers have the opportunity to select Penix, who was a star at Tampa Bay Tech, in the first round or later if necessary. During his time at the Senior Bowl, Penix expressed his attachment to Tampa, calling it home and stating that it means everything to him. He grew up in Dade City, Florida, which is 30 minutes north of Tampa, and moved to the city for his final two years of high school. Penix even has a tattoo of Tampa to symbolize his roots.
Although Penix chose not to participate in the Senior Bowl game itself, he impressed observers during practices. Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus reported that Penix was the “most impressive quarterback” during those practices, showcasing his NFL-caliber arm talent and well-placed throws. Despite his injury history, Penix embraces the challenges he has faced and believes they have shaped him into the person and player he is today.
