Bubba Wallace delivered a flawless performance at Daytona International Speedway, taking the checkered flag in Duel 1 and securing a P3 starting spot for the Daytona 500. With teammate Tyler Reddick providing crucial support, the 23XI Racing driver executed a perfect strategy, leading the most laps of the race and outpacing William Byron in the closing moments.
Wallace’s triumph in the Duel is a major momentum boost ahead of Sunday’s Great American Race, a race where he’s finished runner-up twice but has yet to claim victory.
“I Got One Now, I’m Good”
In his post-race interview, Wallace couldn’t hide his excitement, crediting Reddick for the perfect push and relishing a long-awaited achievement.
“Thanks. Man, what a night. The crowd is loud tonight. Appreciate you guys. I hope that was a good race. Thanks to Tyler. That was awesome to see two team cars work together that well and learn a lot for Sunday. He did a great job pushing me.”
Wallace admitted that he had struggled with car balance in the pack but had a rocket ship when running upfront. The No. 23 McDonald’s Toyota Camry XSE showed raw speed, giving Wallace confidence heading into Sunday.
“Our McDonald’s Toyota Camry was really fast. Two different balances from being in the pack to being out front. Have some work to do there. I’ve wanted one of these Duel wins for so long. All my buddies got one. Tyler got one last year. I was pissed off. I got one now. I’m good.”
Wallace Builds Momentum for Daytona 500
This Duel win isn’t just another race victory—it’s a statement. Wallace has faced criticism in the past for not capitalizing on big moments, but his composure in the Duel shows a new level of confidence and execution.
He’ll now chase history on Sunday, looking to become the first Black driver since Wendell Scott to win a Cup Series points-paying race at Daytona.
