The introduction of the latest regulations was not received with enthusiasm, to say the least. Many teams and drivers have expressed their concerns about various aspects of these regulations. One major concern is with the power units, which will now deliver a combination of internal combustion and electric power in a 50/50 ratio. Additionally, active aerodynamics has been added to the cars to allow them to reduce drag and compensate for the lack of power on the straights.

Fortunately, there is still room for changes in these new regulations. McLaren Team Director, Andrea Stella, referred to them as a draft, echoing the sentiments of Martin Brundle, who also used this term in his assessment of the rules. While Brundle expressed his disappointment in an exclusive interview for GrandPrix247, Senior expressed concerns but remains optimistic about F1, the FIA, and the teams working together to resolve any issues before 2026.

In his column for Sky Sports F1, Brundle explained that the proposed changes in the 2026 F1 regulations were announced during the Canadian GP. However, he described them as a mixture of preliminary regulations and a wish list based on technical considerations. Not surprisingly, these proposals were met with some skepticism by both the teams and the media.

To summarize, the new regulations aim to increase battery energy usage, resulting in roughly equal parts sustainable fuel engine and electric propulsion. This will be accompanied by a reduction in downforce and drag to improve the efficiency of cars when using electric energy. Active aerodynamics will be employed, with the front and rear wings adjusting as necessary on straightaways and curves. The cars themselves will also be slightly smaller, with an optimistic emphasis on agility, and the goal is to reduce their total weight by 30 kg.

Brundle went on to analyze the regulations for the 2026 season, highlighting areas of concern while maintaining a hopeful perspective. He expressed his inclination to address these issues with a positive mindset, as history has shown that collaboration between the FIA, F1, and teams generally leads to favorable results. Over the years, F1 has had to adapt to remain at the forefront of innovation and entertainment.

There are some apprehensions regarding possible high speeds on straight stretches and lower speeds in curves due to the aerodynamic format. Personally, Brundle is particularly concerned about the front and rear wings, which may be prone to displacement in high-speed curves due to debris, damage, or malfunction.

However, it is worth noting that F1 has been using fly-by-wire throttle and brakes for some time. As a result, Brundle believes that this technological advancement can mitigate some of the concerns.

As a veteran of 158 major prizes, Brundle remains uncertain about the future of racing beyond 2026. The removal of the MGU-H from the turbocharger, which played a crucial role in generating electrical power, and the absence of battery regeneration by the front wheels pose challenges. This may make it difficult to generate the necessary energy for the larger battery, especially on circuits with multiple straights and few significant braking zones. The impact of these changes on the essence of pure racing is yet to be determined. Additionally, Brundle warns those eager for the elimination of DRS rear wings, as the consequences may not align with their expectations.

Reducing the weight of the car by 30 kg, despite enhanced collision protection, active aerodynamics features, and a larger battery, will be a formidable task. The 65-year-old British commentator concludes that we will soon find out the answers, as the new cars will hit the track in just 18 months. It is important to note that teams are not allowed to begin their aerodynamic work until 2025, according to the regulations.
