Browns Set Timeline for Chubb Decision

The Cleveland Browns Face Big Decision on Nick Chubb’s Future

The Cleveland Browns are facing a crucial decision regarding Nick Chubb’s future this offseason. The team’s general manager and executive vice president, Andrew Berry, acknowledged during a recent press conference that Chubb’s contract is a major concern. With a cap hit of nearly $16 million next season, it’s a hefty price tag for a running back, especially considering Chubb’s recent knee injury requiring two surgeries. Releasing Chubb would save the Browns $11.825 million.

Despite the financial considerations, Chubb is an integral part of the Browns’ offense and has established himself as one of Cleveland’s all-time greats. Over his six-year career, Chubb has amassed an impressive 6,511 rushing yards and 48 touchdowns, with an elite average of 5.3 yards per carry.

Berry provided some insight into the timeline for contract decisions, stating that each situation is unique. Some decisions could be made before or during the NFL scouting combine, while others may take longer. Berry emphasized that the team will take the necessary time and energy to make the right contract decisions.

Browns Determined to Bring Back Nick Chubb

Nick Chubb’s season-ending knee injury in Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers was a devastating blow. After undergoing two surgeries, Chubb’s return timeline remains uncertain. However, the Browns have expressed their desire to keep Chubb in their uniform for the upcoming season.

Berry addressed the issue, stating that they don’t want Chubb’s last carry for the Browns to be in Pittsburgh. While there are details to work out, the team is committed to finding a solution that keeps Chubb on the roster.

Chubb has been relatively quiet since his surgery but has been present at the team facility. He even made a special appearance as the Dawg Pound Captain during the team’s regular season finale.

RESTRUCTURING DESHAUN WATSON’S CONTRACT COULD PROVIDE CAP RELIEF FOR BROWNS

The Cleveland Browns face some important decisions this offseason as they navigate the salary cap. One player they will likely focus on is running back Nick Chubb, while another is quarterback Deshaun Watson. Currently, Watson’s contract will count a staggering $63.9 million against the cap for the next three seasons.

However, there is potential for the Browns to create around $33 million in cap space by restructuring Watson’s contract. General Manager Andrew Berry is cautious about discussing this matter at the moment but remains optimistic about the team’s overall cap situation.

When asked about the Browns’ cap situation, Berry responded, “There are probably multiple answers to what our overall cap situation is, but ‘good’ might be the best way to describe it.” He further explained, “We feel really good about where we are in our roster’s life cycle. We have a lot of good players who either are on their second contracts or are approaching their second contracts. But it’s something that we’ve been thoughtful about in terms of our planning for multiple years, and we feel good about where we are headed into the 2024 season.”

FREE AGENCY LOOMS FOR BROWNS

In addition to addressing their cap situation, the Browns also have some important free agents to consider. These include running back Kareem Hunt, pass-rusher Za’Darius Smith, quarterback Joe Flacco, and defensive tackle Shelby Harris. The team will need to make strategic decisions regarding these players to ensure continued success.
