Brodie Kostecki's Dominance Shines in Crash-Shortened Albert Park Showdown!
In a thrilling climax to the weekend at the Albert Park Grand Prix circuit in Melbourne, Brodie Kostecki showcased his racing prowess, clinching his third victory in a dramatic final race that was abruptly cut short by a fierce crash. The driver of the Dick Johnson Racing Ford Mustang executed a masterclass strategy, applying relentless pressure on Triple Eight’s Will Brown, ultimately forcing him into a costly mistake on the penultimate lap. Kostecki surged ahead, crossing the finish line with a decisive 1.75-second lead—a performance that not only earned him the coveted Larry Perkins Trophy but also propelled him to the top of the championship standings.
“What a fantastic weekend,” Kostecki exclaimed, reveling in his second victory of the prestigious Larry Perkins Trophy. “I had the speed everywhere; I didn’t want to get too close to him to affect it. I knew in the last two laps I was going to put a big attack on.” This victory marks a significant turning point for Kostecki, who is now leading the points chase, overtaking Broc Feeney, the only other driver to secure a win at Albert Park.
Will Brown, despite his misstep, managed to salvage a commendable second place. “He [Kostecki] was the guy I was watching from the start. I thought if he got into second, he was going to be tough,” Brown admitted, who also hosts a podcast with Kostecki. “He forced me into my own error. It’s on me, and I am excited to get a result instead of all the carnage.”
Completing the podium and securing his first top-three finish in nearly a year was Tickford Racing’s Thomas Randle, who had a remarkable start from the front row. “I just wanted to get off the line well, but neither of us had anything for Brodie. They [DJR] have put a rocketship together,” Randle acknowledged, recognizing Kostecki’s formidable speed. “To be here on the podium… maybe second was on offer, but those guys are too quick.”
The chaos didn’t stop there. The race began with an explosive crash as Ryan Wood and Kai Allen collided heading into the first corner, resulting in both cars suffering immediate flat tires. The incident triggered a chain reaction, with Triple Eight’s Feeney spinning out and subsequently colliding with the Erebus Motorsport Chevrolet of Cooper Murray, followed by a hit from Zach Bates in the Matt Stone Racing Chevrolet. The championship leader was eliminated in the chaos, leaving the Triple Eight team with a monumental task to repair the damaged car in time for the upcoming double-header in New Zealand.
With this stunning victory, Kostecki now leads the championship with an impressive 485 points, followed closely by Cam Waters from Tickford Racing at 467 points. Feeney has dropped to third with 455 points, while other contenders like Payne and Anton De Pasquale trail with 412 and 354 points, respectively. The next high-octane round of the series is set to take place at Taupo Motorsport Park in New Zealand from April 10-12.
As Kostecki continues to dominate the track, fans and competitors alike will be watching closely to see if he can maintain this momentum in the races to come!
