The reborn Renault 4 has been spotted in production form just days before the debut of its supermini sibling, the new Renault 5. Set to hit the market in 2025, the Renault 4 is an evolution of the rugged and Dakar-inspired concept, the 2022 4Ever Trophy, and will utilize the same Ampr Small EV architecture as the 5, albeit lower.
As a direct rival to the Jeep Avenger and the future Mini Aceman, the electric crossover takes obvious visual inspiration from its 1960s namesake, which sold over eight million units worldwide over a three-decade production run and is widely considered the world’s first mass-produced hatchback.
As demonstrated in these early spy photos, the new 4 has a significantly higher height but retains the overall proportions and distinctive slanted C-pillar of the original car. Retro lighting designs at each end, and undoubtedly a variety of 1960s-themed finishing details inside and out, will enhance its retro appeal.
The more extravagant off-road-inspired design elements – its heavily flared wings and prominent plastic skirts – have been removed for the production car, which will be positioned more explicitly as a compact crossover focused on urban environments, adopting some rugged details that nod to the utilitarian origins of the name.
However, it is expected to be offered exclusively with front-wheel drive, like the 5, and focus on maneuverability and refinement within the city.
It is also expected to share the 52kWh battery of the supermini for a range of nearly 250 miles and be available with a 134bhp engine that should allow it to perform in line with its rivals.
These initial images also offer a first look at the interior of the 4, which will mark an obvious visual departure from its Mégane and Scenic counterparts, but will still be centered around Renault’s latest generation infotainment system.
Renault has not said when it plans to reveal the new 4, but a likely venue would be the Paris Motor Show in October.
