McLaren’s Ruthless Move Denies Sauber’s Request During Intense Racing Battle

In a heart-pounding exchange of text messages during the Austrian Grand Prix, Sauber’s team principal, Jonathan Wheatley, desperately pleaded with McLaren’s Zak Brown not to lap his driver, Gabriel Bortoleto, who was fiercely chasing Fernando Alonso for seventh place. Despite Wheatley’s request, McLaren’s drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, overtook Bortoleto, crushing Sauber’s hopes of a higher position.

As the race unfolded, Bortoleto engaged in a thrilling battle with Alonso, attempting to overtake the seasoned driver only to be thwarted in the end. Wheatley found humor in the situation, revealing that he had messaged Zak Brown during the race, begging McLaren not to lap them. Wheatley shared, “I was more looking behind at getting lapped, and I messaged Zak in the race and said, ‘Don’t lap us!’ But they did.”

Despite the setback, Bortoleto managed to secure his first-ever Formula 1 points by finishing in eighth place. Wheatley expressed his confidence in the Brazilian driver, emphasizing that Bortoleto’s hard work and dedication would undoubtedly lead to a bright future in the sport. He commended Bortoleto’s performance at the Red Bull Ring, where he was voted Driver of the Day by Formula 1 fans.

Reflecting on Bortoleto’s journey to success, Wheatley highlighted the driver’s resilience and adaptability, noting that Bortoleto had not undergone extensive Testing Previous Car (TPC) programs like some of his peers. Despite being a newcomer to the sport, Bortoleto’s consistent growth and impressive skills have solidified his position as a rising star in Formula 1.

Wheatley’s unwavering support for Bortoleto’s talent and determination underscores the young driver’s potential to make a significant impact in the world of Formula 1. As Bortoleto continues to hone his skills and tackle new challenges on the track, the racing community eagerly anticipates his future successes and the mark he will leave on the sport.
