Gabriel Bortoleto from Invicta Racing secured pole position during the qualifying session for the Formula 2 race in Imola. The session was marked by the exclusion of several lap times due to track limits. After a two-year break, Formula 2 returned to Imola, with only the mid-season tests in Barcelona providing recent mileage for the F2 grid. Zane Maloney, the current championship leader, initially set the fastest time, but Oliver Bearman and Isack Hadjar quickly surpassed him. Pepe Marti caused a yellow flag moment, but managed to avoid a serious accident. Bortoleto briefly took the lead before Maloney reclaimed the top spot. The AIX duo, Durksen and Taylor Barnard, secured fourth and fifth place respectively, followed by Paul Aron. Franco Colapinto narrowly avoided an accident. Bortoleto set the fastest time with 17 minutes remaining in the session. The drivers then went to the pits to change their tires. At the end of the first stint, Bortoleto was in the lead, followed by Maloney and Hadjar. AIX remained in fourth and fifth place. Mercedes prospect Andrea Kimi Antonelli had his lap time excluded due to track limits. Dennis Hauger led the drivers back on track for the second stint. Jack Crawford had issues with the car and couldn’t set a time in the first stint. ART’s Victor Martin also had car trouble after going off track and getting stuck in the gravel trap. Oliver Bearman briefly held provisional pole position before Bortoleto secured pole by half a tenth. The Brazilian driver took pole, followed by Bearman and Hadjar. Antonelli finished in fourth place. Durksen finished fifth, with Maloney in sixth. The Prema drivers were penalized and dropped to 16th and 18th places for exceeding track limits. Many other drivers also had their times excluded. The top ten for the reversed grid pole position in tomorrow’s Sprint race were Bortoleto, Hadjar, Durksen, Maloney, Stanek, Fittipaldi, Hauger, Marti, Verschoor, and Colapinto.
