Spied testing in Scandinavia, the all-new iX3 is set to revolutionize the SUV market. With its cutting-edge Neue Klasse platform, the iX3 promises superior performance and an extended driving range compared to its predecessor. Originally unveiled as a concept in 2018, the iX3 is manufactured in China.

BMW’s decision not to introduce the first-ever iX3 in the United States was influenced by its limited driving range. However, the new iX3 addresses this concern and offers rear-wheel drive for an enhanced dynamic experience. While other electric vehicles may struggle on the road, the iX3’s all-wheel drive ensures optimal performance.

The second-generation iX3 shares a similar footprint with the X3, BMW’s popular internal combustion-engined model known as the G45. Spy photographers recently caught a glimpse of the iX3’s interior, revealing a unique toggle switch-like gear selector in place of the traditional gear shift knob.

Unlike its competitors, the 2026 BMW iX3 is expected to feature direct drive, providing a seamless and efficient driving experience. Rumors suggest that BMW may adopt a Tesla-inspired naming convention for the iX3, but this remains unconfirmed. Regardless, the iX3 will offer both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options, as well as a choice between two battery sizes.

Series production for European markets is scheduled to begin in July 2025, making the iX3 a 2026 model. Other markets, including the United States, will follow suit in 2026 and 2027. Production for the European market will take place in Hungary, at Plant Debrecen. In early 2026, production will expand to include Plant Munich in Germany and BMW Brilliance Automotive’s Shenyang facility in China. The San Luis Potosi production complex in Mexico will also contribute to the production of the Neue Klasse vehicles starting in 2027.

The iX3 is expected to spawn M Performance and M versions, with the most powerful variant potentially named ZA5. Inside, the iX3 will boast a full-width display at the base of the windshield, as well as a three-dimensional augmented reality head-up display. Additional features include multifunction seats with massage function, a range of M accessories, and Level 3 semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

In a groundbreaking move, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled their Level 3 autonomous driving system, known as DRIVE PILOT. This cutting-edge technology, which doesn’t require a steering wheel, is set to revolutionize the automotive industry. But Mercedes-Benz isn’t the only player in the game. BMW has also entered the race with their own Level 3 autonomy system called BMW Personal Pilot L3.

While Mercedes-Benz has already introduced their system to the US market, BMW’s offering is currently only available in Germany. However, this is just the beginning of a new era in transportation. With Level 4 high automation on the horizon, the possibilities are endless.

But what exactly does Level 3 autonomy mean? It signifies a significant leap forward in self-driving capabilities. The car is able to take full control in certain situations, allowing the driver to relax and let the vehicle do the work. This is a major step towards a future where cars are fully autonomous.

Of course, this level of technology doesn’t come cheap. The BMW Personal Pilot L3 comes with a hefty price tag of 6,000 euros or 6,475 dollars. But for those who value convenience and cutting-edge innovation, it may be worth every penny.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, we can expect to see more advancements in autonomous driving technology. The race to Level 5 full automation is well underway, and it’s only a matter of time before we see cars on the road without a human driver. The future is here, and it’s an exciting time to be a part of the automotive industry.
