BMW has revealed the design of its Art Car that will be displayed on the #20 M Hybrid V8 Hypercar at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 15-16. This collaboration with artist Julie Mehretu resulted in a unique “performative painting” on the car, as well as on the drivers’ suits. This Art Car not only celebrates BMW’s 20th Art Car, but also marks its return to the top sports car category in Le Mans since its victory in 1999. The #20 BMW-WRT Hypercar has been competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship and achieved its best position of sixth place at the 6 Hours of Imola. BMW considers Art Cars as an integral part of its cultural commitment and Mehretu’s contribution is seen as a strong addition to the series. The artist herself sees the Art Car as a racing vehicle, rather than an exhibition piece, and emphasizes the collaboration between the art, racing, and engineering teams. The tradition of Art Cars began in 1975 with French racing driver Herve Poulain and this year’s Le Mans edition will feature the highest number of Hypercars to date, with the #20 being one of the 23 entered in the top class.
