It is already on July 7th that new vehicles sold in the European Union (EU) will be equipped with the Event Data Recorder (EDR), that is, a device similar to the black box used by airplanes and that stores and collects essential data to determine the causes of an accident.
However, unlike airplanes, in cars the EDR system does not have the ability to record conversations that take place inside the cabin.
In this way, the EDR will record more than a dozen variables, including accelerator pressure or engine rotations; turning angle and angular velocity in degrees; speed in the last 5 seconds; use of brakes; activation of airbags and seatbelt pretensioners, among other data that will be stored in very specific situations, in order to contribute to determining causes and responsibilities in the event of an accident.
However, the device will not allow recording images or audio, but only driving data. This new device will be integrated into all new vehicles as a safety measure.
