NEOM McLaren: Sam Bird talks about challenges and preparation for the race at Anhembi Sambadrome

Sam Bird, from NEOM McLaren, spoke to the press before the race at Anhembi Sambadrome. The English driver, who joined McLaren after his time with Jaguar TCS Racing, is confident and excited for the competition.

Bird is aware of the high temperatures he will face during the race, but believes he is well prepared to deal with the challenge. He revealed that he trains in high temperatures at his home, where he has a gym with an industrial heater. Bird exercises on a stationary bike for about an hour, sweating a lot and preparing for races in extreme conditions.

After a six-week break, due to the cancellation of the Hyderabad E-Prix, the championship is back. During this period, Bird took the opportunity to train, rest, and have fun. He spent time in Dubai, played a lot of golf, walked his dogs, spent time with family and friends, as well as doing some simulator work and visiting the team in Bicester.

McLaren had a good start to the season, with Bird finishing fourth in the first race in Diriyah and his teammate, Jake Hughes, finishing seventh in Mexico and fourth in the second race in Diriyah. Bird is confident that the team will continue to progress and hopes to achieve more competitive results throughout the season.

The driver also received praise from Nick Cassidy, the championship leader and his replacement at Jaguar. Bird was happy to hear Cassidy’s words, who described McLaren as a “super strong team.” Bird believes the team is on the right track to achieve even better results and is confident they will secure their first podium soon.

Bird also commented on the new championship competition, the Manufacturers’ Trophy, in partnership with Nissan. Although it is a positive initiative for the manufacturers, McLaren’s drivers are focused on representing the team well and do not see the trophy as their main concern. However, Bird is excited about the future of the championship, especially with the arrival of the GEN4 era, which will bring faster cars and longer races.

McLaren had a good start to the season and expectations for the rest of the championship are high. Bird, although realistic, remains hopeful about what is to come. He acknowledges that some tracks are more favorable for other teams, such as Porsche, Andretti, Envision, and Jaguar, but believes that if McLaren can challenge these teams and finish close to them, it will be a successful year for the team. The goal is to surpass the eighth position achieved in last year’s team championship and achieve a sixth place this season.
