Best Players Jets MUST Re-Sign in 2024 NFL Free Agency

The Jets’ Future Hangs in the Balance: Who Should Stay and Who Should Go?

As the clock ticks for the New York Jets’ general manager Joe Douglas and coach Robert Saleh, every decision they make becomes crucial. With the 2024 NFL free agency looming, it’s time to examine the players that the Jets must re-sign to secure their future.

Douglas’ record as Jets GM has been dismal, with a 27-56 record since 2019. Saleh hasn’t fared much better, with an 18-33 record in three seasons as head coach. The Jets’ playoff hopes were dashed in 2023, despite a strong defense, when quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury. Behind the scenes and on the field, it was an ugly season for the Jets.

To avoid another disaster, the Jets need to make smart decisions this offseason, starting with re-signing key players from last season’s roster.

One player the Jets should prioritize is Bryce Huff. The 25-year-old edge rusher led the team with 10 sacks in 2023 and proved himself to be elite at what he does. The Jets should do everything they can to keep him, but they may face tough competition in free agency.

Greg Zuerlein and Thomas Morstead, the veteran kickers, should also be brought back. Both players had impressive performances in 2023 and were key contributors to the team. Zuerlein, in particular, has been the Jets’ most consistent offensive player in recent seasons.

The Jets should also consider re-signing veteran defensive linemen Solomon Thomas and Quinton Jefferson. Thomas, a Saleh disciple from their time with the San Francisco 49ers, had a solid season with five sacks. Jefferson, before his injury, had six sacks and 34 tackles as a starter on the D-Line.

Ashtyn Davis, who had a breakout season as a ballhawk on defense, should also be re-signed. The 27-year-old safety made an impact with three interceptions, eight passes defended, and three fumble recoveries in limited playing time.

Special teams captain Justin Hardee deserves a spot on the roster as well, unless his asking price is too high.

On the other hand, there are players the Jets should let go. Offensive tackles Mekhi Becton and Duane Brown, as well as edge rusher Carl Lawson, are at the top of that list. Becton struggled in 2023 and appeared ill-equipped to play left tackle in the NFL. Brown was plagued by injuries and is likely headed for retirement. Lawson was a healthy scratch for most of the season, making it an easy decision to part ways.

Safety Jordan Whitehead, despite his strong start with three interceptions in Week 1, should only be re-signed if the contract is affordable. Center Connor McGovern could be kept as a depth player, but not at a starter’s salary.

The Jets’ future hangs in the balance, and the decisions made this offseason will shape their destiny. It’s time for the Jets to make smart choices and build a team that can finally break their 13-season playoff drought.
