Bernie Ecclestone on Max Verstappen’s Championship Fate: “He Needs Norris to Stumble”

As the 2024 Formula 1 season barrels towards its climax, the championship race has reached fever pitch. Max Verstappen, the reigning champion, finds himself clinging to a 52-point lead over McLaren’s in-form Lando Norris, with six races left to decide it all. However, Red Bull’s struggles this season have left Verstappen vulnerable, and former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone believes that the Dutchman may need more than just skill to secure another title – he may need a dose of luck.

Verstappen, who has seen his once-dominant Red Bull car lose pace compared to the surging McLaren, now faces a relentless challenge from Norris. The British driver has been on a tear, closing the points gap with impressive consistency and race wins. Ecclestone, known for his blunt assessments of the sport, reckons that the battle for the championship could go down to the wire, but it may not be entirely in Verstappen’s hands.

“I think it will be difficult for Max,” Ecclestone said, assessing the Dutchman’s title prospects. “He already has the leadership of the ranking, but now he will only need a little luck, or possibly a little bad luck from Lando, to make it… So, we’ll see, but in general, I think Verstappen will manage to win the championship.”

Ecclestone’s comments reflect the uncertainty swirling around Verstappen’s title defense. McLaren’s Norris has emerged as a serious threat, backed by a resurgent McLaren team that has consistently outpaced Red Bull in recent races. Despite McLaren’s performance gains, mistakes on the pit wall and in strategy have cost Norris valuable points, allowing Verstappen to retain his championship lead. Ecclestone suggests that these errors might continue to play a crucial role in the title fight.

“McLaren is the fastest car at the moment, and I imagine it will win the Constructors’ title,” Ecclestone noted. “They have two very capable drivers and a good car.”

The two-driver attack of Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri has indeed made McLaren a formidable force, with both drivers scoring consistently and applying pressure on Red Bull. Verstappen, on the other hand, is largely fighting a solo battle, as Sergio Perez has struggled to match his teammate’s performances. This dynamic, coupled with McLaren’s surge, has turned the constructors’ race on its head.

Ecclestone’s view is that McLaren’s advantage in the Constructors’ Championship will likely secure them that title, but Verstappen still has a chance to hold on to the Drivers’ crown. However, it’s clear that Red Bull needs to turn around their form, while Verstappen must rely on a bit of fortune—and perhaps a stumble or two from Norris—to come out on top.

With both championships still up for grabs, the final stretch of the season promises to deliver some of the most intense racing action in years. Can Verstappen weather the storm, or will Norris complete the underdog surge to claim his first F1 title? The world is watching, and the stakes have never been higher.
