Oliver Bearman is set to make an earlier-than-expected full Formula 1 race debut for Haas at next weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, stepping in for the suspended Kevin Magnussen. The 18-year-old British driver will take over the reins after Magnussen was handed a one-race ban due to accumulating 12 penalty points over a 12-month period, following a clash with Pierre Gasly during the Italian Grand Prix.
Magnussen’s penalty came after he collided with Gasly at Monza’s second chicane, resulting in a 10-second time penalty and the crucial points that pushed him over the penalty limit. As a result, Bearman, who has been Haas’ reserve driver this season and is slated for a 2025 full-time seat, will fill in for the Dane in Baku.
Bearman’s call-up comes at a critical time in his development, as the young talent has already participated in four FP1 sessions this season, including Imola, Barcelona, Silverstone, and the Hungaroring. While his Baku appearance will be his first full race weekend in Formula 1, it won’t be his first grand prix race. Bearman had a brief but impressive F1 debut earlier this year when he substituted for Carlos Sainz at Ferrari during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, finishing a strong seventh.
Magnussen is expected to return for the Singapore Grand Prix after serving his ban, resuming his seat alongside Nico Hulkenberg for the remaining races of the 2024 season. For Bearman, this opportunity presents a key moment to showcase his readiness for the top tier of motorsport, as he continues to build toward a full-time drive with Haas in 2025.
