Amidst the growing uncertainty surrounding Kevin Magnussen’s participation in all Formula 1 races in 2024, Oliver Bearman’s practice session with Haas at Imola this weekend is perfectly timed. Bearman’s 2024 campaign has been disorganized, to say the least. After a challenging start to the Formula 2 season with an uncompetitive Prema car in Bahrain, the young British driver was removed from his pole position in Jeddah to make a sensational debut in Formula 1 with Ferrari, replacing the injured Carlos Sainz. Despite his lack of experience, Bearman performed admirably and scored points in his debut, finishing an impressive seventh. Highly regarded as a potential Formula 1 driver for next season, Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur stated after the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix that Bearman’s main focus remains on Formula 2 this year. However, Bearman faced more difficulties in the F2 race in Melbourne, resulting in only two points scored in the championship so far. It is evident that winning the F2 title is beyond the reach of the 19-year-old, and showcasing his skills in a Formula 1 car will likely enhance his chances of securing a full-time seat next year.
This is definitely the view of Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu, who believes that assessing Bearman’s abilities during F1 practice sessions is more significant than his F2 campaign.
“It’s a combination; he needs to stand out in F2, for sure,” said Komatsu. “But when we collaborate directly with him, it’s necessary to understand all the complexities, all the circumstances or the logic behind certain things happening. So yes, I would probably give more importance to what we do with him, how he performs in our environment. But of course, he needs to stand out in F2. That’s evident.
“We have six sessions [FP1] scheduled for him, so we will see the first one in Imola. We are really excited to see how we can help him grow and how we can work effectively together.”
In addition to the training opportunities and testing responsibilities at Ferrari, Bearman is also a reserve driver for Haas and, as Komatsu mentioned, this weekend marks the beginning of six FP1 sessions with the team. In Imola, Bearman will participate in the FP1 in place of Magnussen. Considering that teams are only required to provide two FP1 slots throughout the year for reserve and development drivers, it is clear that Haas is evaluating Bearman for their available seat in 2025, which was left vacant by Nico Hulkenberg.
“I am really looking forward to joining the team and participating in the FP1 in Imola,” said Bearman. “The team is having a strong season and I am hoping that, with the extra experience I have gained since the last time we were together, I can help continue the good momentum they are in!”
Evaluating, or even preparing, would be a big surprise if Bearman did not secure a seat in 2025. Furthermore, Bearman’s participation in the FP1 in place of Magnussen in Imola is well-timed, considering the possibility of a race ban for the Danish driver. After questionable driving behavior in Miami, Magnussen’s total penalty points reached 10 out of the 12 required for a one-race ban.
The race stewards have been eager to issue two penalty points along with time penalties for infractions such as causing a collision during a Grand Prix, and with 18 stages of the 2024 season remaining, it would be a safe assumption that Magnussen will have to sit out at least once due to Haas’ willingness to use him as an obstacle on track.
With Magnussen sidelined, Bearman is the obvious choice to step in and contribute to Haas’ racing effort, and as a result, the opportunity at Imola is arguably convenient.
