Max Verstappen is in a positive state of mind as Formula 1 begins a series of three well-known European races, starting with the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya this weekend. The Red Bull driver secured his first F1 victory at this track in 2016, when he was just 18 years old, and has since won on his last two visits. After the Spanish Grand Prix, Verstappen will compete in Austria and the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where he emerged victorious last year, dominating the championship. This year, Verstappen’s recent win at the rainy Canadian Grand Prix has boosted his confidence, and he anticipates that the Circuit de Catalunya will be more suitable for his car, with fewer concerns about bumps and kerbs. Verstappen currently leads Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 56 points after nine races and aims to maintain his momentum since Canada. He is looking forward to racing this weekend and hopes for favorable weather conditions.

Verstappen’s impressive performance has allowed him to secure the top position in the standings since the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix, and he has maintained his advantage since then. Meanwhile, his teammate Sergio Perez needs a strong race after suffering two consecutive retirements. Unfortunately, Perez carries a three-place grid penalty from Montreal, a weekend he described as a “disaster.” He believes that sometimes it is necessary to start over and has been doing so since the last race.

A Red Bull currently has a 49-point advantage over Ferrari in the constructors’ championship. Ferrari is determined to recover from the setback of a double retirement in Canada, following their victory with Leclerc in Monaco. The Spanish Grand Prix marks Carlos Sainz’s last race at home with Ferrari. Sainz will leave at the end of the season to make way for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. This race presents a real opportunity for Sainz to secure a win. Team boss Fred Vasseur is confident that the Spanish Grand Prix will showcase Ferrari’s competitiveness, matching the performance they displayed throughout the season before the Canadian Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso, from Aston Martin, who is preparing for his 21st home race, will undoubtedly have a substantial fan base. The 42-year-old driver last emerged victorious at the Circuit de Catalunya in 2013, when he was driving for Ferrari.

Mercedes is heading to Barcelona with renewed optimism after George Russell’s impressive pole position and third place in Canada. This was the first time the team stepped onto the podium this season. Team principal Toto Wolff expressed his confidence in the upcoming race, stating that they have new components arriving in Barcelona that should boost their performance. He hopes that this positive momentum continues for the team, especially considering their second and third places at the circuit last year.

Meanwhile, McLaren has consistently performed well, achieving podium finishes in the last five races. Lando Norris secured a victory and three second places, while Oscar Piastri secured a second place in Monaco. Norris acknowledges that the Barcelona track presents its own challenges, but he believes that the team is well positioned to maximize their performance and extract the full potential of their car.

In other news, Oliver Bearman, a British driver who is rumored to have a spot in next year’s race, will take over Nico Hulkenberg’s car during the first practice session on Friday in Barcelona. This presents an opportunity for Bearman to showcase his skills and potentially impress the team.
