02 Earl Bamber, from New Zealand, and Alex Lynn, from Great Britain, representing Cadillac Racing, were seen in action during the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps TotalEnergies 2024, the third round of the FIA World Endurance Championship 2024. The event took place from May 8 to 11, 2024, at the Spa-Francorchamps Circuit in Stavelot, Belgium. The photo, captured by Javier Jimenez from DPPI, shows the intense atmosphere of the race.
During the race, Earl Bamber was involved in a serious accident with the Cadillac V-Series.R #2 on the Kemmel straight. This incident led to the red flag being raised, with 1 hour and 45 minutes remaining on the clock. Despite the interruption, the race continued and was scheduled to end at 7 pm local time.
Bamber was chasing Neel Jani from Proton Competition, aiming for third place. He caught up with the Porsche 963 #99, driven by Jani, after successfully overtaking Sean Galael in the BMW WRT M4 GT3 #31. Bamber also attempted to overtake Galael, but unfortunately collided with the BMW. This collision resulted in both cars hitting the barriers at high speed, causing significant damage to the Cadillac. The BMW also suffered substantial damage and came to a stop against the barriers on the left side of the track.
The severity of the accident caused debris from both vehicles to spread across the track. As a result, race officials raised the red flag to ensure the safety of the drivers. Marshals and the safety team were dispatched to assist the drivers, remove the damaged cars, and clean the track of any debris.
At the time of the red flag, Alessandro Pier Guidi of Ferrari was leading the race after overtaking Jani earlier. Once the race resumed after an hour under virtual and full safety car, Jani regained the lead, closely followed by James Calado of Ferrari in Ferrari 499P #51. Jani managed to maintain a small gap between him and Calado.
However, Calado seized the opportunity to overtake Jani after navigating through traffic at Eau Rouge and Raidillon. He quickly passed Jani on the Kemmel straight at Les Combes, securing the lead for his team. Subsequently, Calado and later Pier Guidi, who took over from Calado, extended their lead to over 23 seconds. Initially, their lead was over Jani, but now it is over the second-place car, Ferrari #50.
As a result of the overtaking maneuvers, Jani dropped to third place, with Antonio Fuoco of Ferrari sister team taking the position. Fuoco’s approach mirrored that of his teammate Calado early in the race. Yifei Ye in AF Corse’s Ferrari #83 holds fourth place, while Nyck de Vries is in fifth place, driving Toyota GR010 Hybrid #7.
Unfortunately, Porsche #5, which started the race in pole position with Fred Makowiecki, had to retire after Michael Christensen, Makowiecki’s partner, collided with the barrier at Blanchimont. This collision caused irreparable damage to the car, resulting in a yellow flag throughout the circuit.
Furthermore, Lamborghini SC63 #63, driven by WEC debutant Andrea Caldarelli, had to withdraw from the race due to damage to the right rear suspension.
In the LMGT3 category, Morris Schuring is leading the race in the Manthey EMA Porsche 911 GT3R #91. Rahel Frey, driving the Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2 #85 Iron Dames, is currently in second place, approximately 8 seconds behind Schuring. Joel Sturm, representing the Porsche #92 Mathey Purerxcing, holds the third position, trailing Frey by about 12 seconds.
