The high-level single-seater season of 2024 began today. Formula 3 starts its first of ten weekends, with scoring rounds of 20 points, while Formula 2 begins its 2024 season with the first of 14 race weekends, consisting of scoring rounds of 28 points.
Here are the reports from Thursday’s action in Sakhir:
Formula 2, the last frontier before aspiring drivers enter the world of Formula 1, started its 2024 season on Friday. The race took place at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, featuring the new car designed by Dallara.
In the 23-lap sprint race, American Jak Crawford of DAMS Lucas Oil team secured pole position after a partial reversal of the qualifying order (top ten).
Crawford had a clean start and led the first lap, followed by Frenchman Victor Martins of ART Grand Prix. On the sixth lap, Zane Maloney of Rodin Motorsport overtook Martins and took second position. Crawford maintained the lead with a one-second advantage.
Determined to seize the opportunity, Maloney closed in on Crawford and took the lead on the eighth lap, starting from eighth position on the grid.
By the tenth lap of the 23, the top five positions were occupied by Maloney, Crawford, Martins, Isack Hadjar of Campos Racing, and Enzo Fittipaldi of Van Amersfoort. However, Fittipaldi was subsequently demoted to sixth place by Paul Aron of HITECH GP.
On lap 25, Maloney had a 2.7s advantage over Crawford, who maintained a similar advantage over Martins. Hadjar, starting from ninth position on the grid, secured third position by overtaking Martins on the 16th lap.
In the final stages of the race, while Maloney remained unchallenged in the front, Hadjar faced pressure from his Spanish Campos teammate Josep Maria Marti. Due to his front tires being “completely destroyed,” Hadjar lost the last podium position to Marti.
Estonian driver Paul Aron finished in fifth place, while Gabriel Bortoleto of Invicta Racing, protected by Fernando Alonso, made his F2 debut and secured sixth position. Zak O’Sullivan of ART Grand Prix and Dennis Hauger of MP Motorsport claimed the last scoring positions in the sprint race.
Andrea Antonelli, the pre-season hypeemeister, had a discreet start to his first F2 season and finished in 14th place. Olie Bearman, a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy and one of the title favorites, finished 16th in his second year with Prema. Franco Colapinto of MP Motorsport received a ten-second stop-and-go penalty for lining up in the wrong starting position.
The race saw retirements from Roman Stanek (Trident), Taylor Barnard (PHM AIX Racing), and Amaury Cordeel (HITECH GP). Bortoleto will start in pole position for Saturday’s feature race.
GPWeekly conducted an interview with him last year during the F4 race in Monza. It is always a positive result for young drivers to achieve a victory in their first appearance in a new series. Arvid, who is currently in his second year of single-seater competition, expressed his satisfaction after his impressive win. He stated, “I just won my sprint race debut today, and I am extremely pleased with the overall result. I am incredibly grateful to my team for the exceptional performance. Although I made some mistakes, I will thoroughly analyze the data and work to improve myself and achieve an even better result in tomorrow’s feature race.”
Dino Beganovic, a Swedish driver with Bosnian heritage and a member of the Ferrari Junior Driver program, secured pole position. Sebastian Montoya, son of renowned F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya, also participated in this series. However, he qualified at the back of the grid for the first round. Laurens van Hoepen from the Netherlands claimed second position, while Italian Leonardo Fornaroli finished third. American driver Max Esterson, coming from a background in sim racing, achieved a respectable sixth place. Mini Monty, on the other hand, finished the race in 18th position.
Unfortunately, Beganovic, who had secured pole position for the feature race on Saturday, suffered a puncture on the first lap. As a result, he was the last driver on the track at the end of the race.
