Automobile production decreases by 13.7% in June

The Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP) revealed that car production in Portugal declined in June for the second consecutive month, with 25,855 vehicles being produced in Portugal, representing a 13.7% decrease compared to the same month in 2023.

In a statement, ACAP announced that in the first six months of 2024, a total of 179,222 vehicles were produced in Portuguese factories, which is a 2.1% decrease compared to the same period last year.

“The statistical information for the first half of 2024 confirms the importance of exports for the automotive sector, as 97.9 percent of vehicles manufactured in Portugal were destined for foreign markets, which contributes positively to the Portuguese trade balance.”, the statement from ACAP adds.

Europe continues to be the leading market for exports of vehicles manufactured in Portugal, representing 84.3% of the total, with Germany (24.3%), Italy (13.0%), France (10.1%), and Spain (9.0%) at the top of the ranking.

In terms of major regions, the African market, led by Algeria (6.0%), remains in second place for exports of cars manufactured in Portugal, accounting for 8.5% of exports. Asia is in third place with 3.5% of exports of vehicles manufactured in Portugal.

Regarding the assembly of vehicles in Portugal, in the month of June, 22 heavy vehicles were assembled, representing an increase of 69.2% compared to the same month in the year 2023.

In cumulative terms, in the first semester of 2024, the assembly of heavy vehicles showed a growth of 93.7% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching a total of 153 vehicles assembled in 2024.

From January to June, 52.3% of the vehicles assembled in national factories were exported, totaling 80 units. The United Kingdom (67.5%) and Germany (32.5%) are the only destinations for these exports.
