Automobile market in Portugal grows 26.1% in 2023.

The national automobile market grew by 26.1% in 2023 compared to the previous year, with 236,053 more vehicles put into circulation, as revealed by the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP) on Tuesday, January 2.

In the last month of 2023, 20,833 motor vehicles were registered, which is 11.3% more than in the same month of 2022 and 8.5% less compared to December 2019.

In terms of categories, in the month of December, 16,635 new passenger cars were registered, which is 11.1% more than in the same month of the previous year, but 6.5% less compared to the same period in 2019.

Overall, and according to ACAP data, throughout 2023, registrations of passenger cars totaled 199,623 units, which represents a positive variation of 26.9% compared to the same period in 2022. Compared to 2019, the market experienced a negative variation of 11.2%.

As for the light commercial vehicle market, in the month of December, there was a positive evolution of 8.1% compared to the same month of the previous year, with 3,305 registered units. When compared to the same month in 2019, there was a decrease of 27.2%.

In cumulative terms, the market reached 28,523 units, which represented a growth of 20.7% compared to 2022 and a decrease of 26% compared to 2019.

As for the heavy vehicle market, which includes passenger and commercial types, in the last month of 2023, there was an increase of 29.6% compared to the same month of 2022, with 893 vehicles of this category sold. Compared to the same month in 2019, the market experienced a growth of 98.4%.

Throughout the year 2023, registrations of this category totaled 7,907 units, which represents a positive variation of 26.9% compared to 2022 and an increase of 33.7% compared to 2019.
