A wave of regret has washed over Richard Childress Racing’s star driver, Austin Hill, following a career-defining gaffe at the Phoenix raceway. Known for his aggressive driving in the Xfinity Series, Hill confronted the harsh reality of self-inflicted errors, with the most recent one being his botched move in the 2025 GOVX 200 at Phoenix Raceway, resulting in a catastrophic multi-car wreck.
The notorious incident took place during the 2024 Xfinity race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where Hill was embroiled in a collision with Cole Custer, driving the #00. The clash led to both drivers being forced out of the race, stirring up a tempest of anger and resentment. Hill, enraged after Custer got him pinned against the wall, retaliated by spinning Custer out, incurring a flat tire himself. Hill defended his actions, stating, “I didn’t destroy his race car so there was no reason for him to destroy mine.” However, the latest Phoenix debacle saw Hill crashing into another #00 car, this time driven by Sheldon Creed, leaving no one to blame but himself.
Driving the No. 21 Chevy, Hill, in a surprising turn of events, crashed into the inside wall without any contact from other drivers. The result was a multi-car debacle that abruptly ended Hill’s race and quashed Richard Childress Racing’s hopes of securing their third victory of the season.
Richard Childress Racing had embarked on their 2025 Xfinity Series campaign in high spirits, following consecutive wins by Jesse Love at Daytona and Austin Hill at Atlanta. These early victories fired up talks about a potential championship win, the first since Tyler Reddick’s illustrious 2019 run. Despite a minor setback at the Circuit of the Americas, the team’s high expectations remained intact for the GOVX 200 at Phoenix Raceway.
Austin Hill, with an impressive top spot in the driver’s standing preceding the Phoenix race, was hopeful to expand his points lead with another win. However, the Phoenix Raceway, dubbed ‘The Jewel of the Desert,’ had been a challenging territory for the Georgia native, boasting only one top-5 finish in six races. The driver hoped to rewrite this narrative, only to be met with disappointment.
In a shocking development on Lap 61, Hill collided with the inside wall, causing a pile-up that involved Sheldon Creed’s No. 00 and Dean Thompson’s No. 26. Reflecting on the incident, Hill stated, “I think that might be one of the dumbest things that has ever happened in my career.” Accepting full responsibility for the unfortunate event, he added, “That one was just 100% on me.”
Hill’s Phoenix fiasco didn’t end there. During Stage 2, he misjudged an entry into Turn 3, triggering the race’s first caution. The race resumed after a brief pause, only to see Hill attempting a risky move that ended in him wrecking his car.
Sheldon Creed, a driver desperate for a win after thirteen runner-up finishes in the Xfinity Series, was unexpectedly caught up in Hill’s blunder. Creed, who had clocked the fastest time in qualifying, was in good stead for a potential victory until the wreck. Unfazed by the setback, Creed expressed resilience and optimism, stating, “We’re not perfect, but we’re gonna make up. Let’s keep going forward.”
Despite a disappointing 36th place finish at Phoenix Raceway, Creed remains hopeful due to his strong performances in the preceding races. With upcoming races in Las Vegas, Homestead-Miami, and Martinsville, Creed has ample opportunities to break his winless streak. Meanwhile, Austin Hill will be looking to bounce back from his blunder, in a bid to redeem his reputation and championship hopes.
