Audi Revolutionizes Formula 1 Structure with Mattia Binotto at the Helm for 2026 Debut

In a groundbreaking move, Audi has shaken up its Formula 1 project in preparation for its highly anticipated full works entry in 2026. The automotive giant has appointed Mattia Binotto to spearhead the operation, consolidating power and expertise under his leadership while eliminating the CEO role at its powertrain division to streamline operations effectively.

Binotto, who joined the program in 2024, now stands as the head honcho of the Audi F1 Project, taking charge of all technical and development aspects spread across various locations, including the Hinwil base run by Sauber, the Neuburg engine facility, and a forthcoming technical center in the UK. Despite not serving as Team Principal, Binotto’s pivotal role lies in harmonizing advancements in both chassis and powertrain divisions as Audi gears up to establish itself as a fully integrated factory team.

The strategic reorganization emphasizes seamless coordination between the race car and powertrain, marking a significant milestone just months before Audi’s collaboration with Sauber takes center stage on the F1 grid in 2026.

Audi’s transition to a robust management structure is well underway, setting the stage for a monumental rebrand to Audi in 2026. Christian Foyer has been appointed as the Chief Operating Officer of Audi Formula Racing GmbH (AFR), the entity responsible for the cutting-edge 2026-spec hybrid power unit. With an impressive 18-year background in F1 spanning various manufacturers and operational departments, Foyer steps in for Adam Baker, who played a pivotal role in kickstarting the Neuburg engine project.

As part of the restructuring, the CEO position at AFR has been dissolved, with Stefan Dreyer assuming the role of Chief Technical Officer and the spokesperson for the AFR management board. The changes underscore Audi’s commitment to arriving on the F1 scene not as a disjointed entity but as a meticulously planned factory team with a unified vision and seamless integration across all facets of the sport.

Jonathan Wheatley, formerly of Red Bull fame, now leads the current Stake F1 Team and will continue at the helm as the team transitions into Audi’s factory outfit. With a focus on race operations and strategic representation at the highest levels of F1, Wheatley’s collaboration with Binotto will be instrumental in fortifying synergy between Audi’s power unit and chassis programs.

The strategic maneuvers by Audi signify a bold step towards establishing a dominant presence in Formula 1, with a powerhouse team of seasoned professionals driving the brand towards a successful debut in 2026. The pressure is on in 2025 to ensure that all elements align seamlessly for Audi’s grand entrance into the pinnacle of motorsport.

Don’t miss the inside scoop on the Audi project labeled as the ‘greatest and most ambitious’ in F1. Stay tuned for more updates on this thrilling development in the world of motorsport.
