Audi has reversed its strategy of changing the names of its models, announced in 2023, which aimed to differentiate combustion engine models from electric models by using even and odd numbers.
The idea behind Audi’s approach was to create a clear separation between the two types of vehicles and to make it easier for the brand’s customers to distinguish between combustion models, including plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles.
The new system caused some confusion, as it determined that models with combustion engines would be designated by the numbers 1, 3, 5, and 7, while electric models would be designated by the numbers 2, 4, 6, and 8.
Thus, the successor to the combustion A6, which is expected to be revealed on March 4, was supposed to be named A7; however, with the newly announced decision, it will retain the designation A6, while the electric version will carry the e-Tron logo and the gasoline versions will be labeled TFSI and TDI for those equipped with a Diesel engine.
“This decision is the result of intense discussions and also follows the wishes of our customers, as well as feedback from our international dealers,” said Audi’s head of sales and marketing, Marco Schubert, in a statement.
“Our nomenclature provides all customers worldwide with an intuitive guide to our portfolio. We chose the names of our models in a way that reveals size and positioning at first glance.”
