Steering the Stars: Andy Cowell’s Strategy for Leading Aston Martin’s Elite Engineering Team

Exclamations rang out in the world of Formula 1 as Andy Cowell fires back at Adrian Newey’s criticism of “weak tools” at Aston Martin, declaring, “We must raise our level!”

The Aston Martin team found themselves under the scrutiny of legendary engineer Adrian Newey, who bluntly pointed out deficiencies in the team’s tools, emphasizing the urgent need for improvement to meet his high standards.

During the Monaco Grand Prix, Newey, who recently joined Aston Martin as the Chief Technical Officer, expressed his concerns about the team’s equipment, particularly singling out the simulator at the Silverstone technical center as a crucial area needing enhancement. In his assessment, Newey remarked, “It is fair to say that some of our tools are weak. Especially the simulator, which is currently not matching reality, not correlating with the track, and that is a fundamental research tool.”

In response to Newey’s remarks, Andy Cowell, who took the helm at Aston Martin in 2024 and assumed the role of team principal in 2025, defended the team’s position. Cowell explained that the integration of new equipment takes time to fine-tune and that even experienced teams face challenges in ensuring everything aligns with track performance.

Cowell praised Newey’s critical eye and high standards, acknowledging the positive impact the esteemed engineer has had since joining the team. “Adrian’s great merit is that he points out what is good and sets a high standard. We have to reach that level. We were already working on it, but he helps refine our priorities,” Cowell affirmed.

The clash of opinions between Cowell and Newey has ignited a fire within Aston Martin, pushing them to strive for excellence and elevate their performance to meet the uncompromising standards set by one of the sport’s most revered figures. In the high-stakes world of Formula 1, every detail matters, and Aston Martin is now on a mission to prove their mettle on the track.
