Fernando Alonso, the renowned Formula 1 driver, has shared his optimism that the Aston Martin team is united in their strategy for the upcoming 2026 F1 season. The forthcoming year is anticipated to bring significant shifts in the sport’s framework, including alterations to the chassis, aerodynamics, engines, and tyres. For Aston Martin, a team that has been stagnant due to the current ruleset, this presents a golden opportunity to vault to the forefront of the competition.
Aston Martin’s team owner, Lawrence Stroll, has been meticulously assembling the components for triumph. His strategy includes a partnership with Honda for a works engine deal commencing next year, a cutting-edge wind tunnel, and the enlistment of industry veterans Andy Cowell and Adrian Newey.
During the pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit, Alonso revealed to a select group of media, including Motorsport Week, that an early shift in focus towards designing a car for 2026 would be prudent unless Aston Martin is in contention for the championship this season.
Alonso expressed, “We are all synchronized on this. The aim is to excel in 2025, but we are also cognizant that 2026 brings a massive regulatory and performance reset. If we aren’t contesting for the World Championship in 2025, the positioning doesn’t matter much. However, if this hampers our 2026 prospects, it could be detrimental.”
He added that the team’s management, under the guidance of Lawrence, Andy, and Adrian, is well-equipped to navigate these decisions.
The only factor that may deter Aston Martin from pivoting early to 2026 F1 development is if their AMR25 proves to be a title contender. The team also faces the significant challenge of transitioning from a Mercedes customer team to a works team in partnership with Honda. This move necessitates the in-house production of a variety of components in preparation for the following season.
Reflecting Alonso’s sentiments, Aston Martin CEO and Team Principal Cowell emphasized that the transition from 2025 to 2026 development is a critical issue for all ten teams. He revealed that some sectors of their business are already entirely focused on 2026, with other departments expected to follow suit throughout the year.
However, Cowell also acknowledged that if the team establishes itself as a contender from the start, it would significantly influence their development path.
As Alonso and Cowell pointed out, the upcoming years will be pivotal for Aston Martin. The team’s strategy and execution in response to the significant changes in 2026 will ultimately define their success or failure in the sport’s new era.
